ZD Wines History

ZD Wines is a renowned, family-owned winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. Founded in 1969 by Norman deLeuze and Gino Zepponi, this iconic winery has been producing world-class wines for over five decades. The initials "ZD" in the winery's name combine the founders' last names, Zepponi and deLeuze, solidifying the partnership that would shape the future of California winemaking.

Norman deLeuze, a California native, was born into a family with a rich winemaking heritage. His grandfather, Ernest deLeuze, emigrated from France in the late 1800s and established one of Northern California's first wineries. This familial connection to winemaking fueled Norman's passion for viticulture, inspiring him to follow in his ancestors' footsteps.

Gino Zepponi, a respected grape grower, shared a similar vision with Norman deLeuze. Together, they envisioned creating a winery that would produce exceptional wines while embracing sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. This forward-thinking approach to winemaking set ZD Wines apart from other wineries in the region.

In 1969, ZD Wines made its debut with a small, handcrafted release of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The inaugural vintage was met with critical acclaim for its elegant style, intense flavors, and meticulous attention to detail. This early success solidified ZD Wines' reputation as a producer of top-quality wines.

As the years passed, ZD Wines expanded its portfolio to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other varietals. The winery's commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly practices became a cornerstone of its identity. ZD Wines took progressive steps to reduce its carbon footprint, implement water conservation techniques, and transition to organic farming practices. These efforts earned the winery Napa Green certification, showcasing its dedication to sustainable viticulture.

The deLeuze family continues to oversee the operations at ZD Wines, upholding the original vision instilled by Norman and Gino. Today, the winery is led by third-generation family members, Brett deLeuze and Robert deLeuze, who serve as President and CEO, respectively. They have continued to innovate and build upon their predecessors' successes while maintaining the winery's commitment to producing exceptional wines.

ZD Wines' wines have consistently garnered accolades and high ratings from industry experts and critics. Their Chardonnays boast vibrant flavors and a rich, creamy texture, while their Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits remarkable depth and complexity. The winery's dedication to hand-harvesting, precise winemaking techniques, and aging in carefully selected oak barrels contribute to the exceptional quality and distinctive character of their wines.

Beyond crafting exceptional wines, ZD Wines has also become a destination for wine enthusiasts visiting Napa Valley. Visitors can enjoy tours and tastings at the winery or participate in educational experiences to delve deeper into the world of winemaking. The winery's inviting hospitality and breathtaking surroundings make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.

In conclusion, ZD Wines has a rich and storied history that spans over five decades. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
