Woof’n Rose Winery History

Woof'n Rose Winery, located in the beautiful region of California's Sierra Foothills, has a captivating history that blends love, passion, and dedication to crafting exceptional wines.

The story begins in the late 1970s when Helen and Robert Woof first fell in love with the picturesque landscapes of the Sierra Foothills. Captivated by the region's untamed beauty and its potential for grape cultivation, the couple purchased a sprawling piece of land in the town of Grass Valley, Nevada County, California. Little did they know that this would mark the beginning of their journey into winemaking.

With a deep appreciation for wine and a desire to create something exceptional, Helen and Robert planted their first vineyard in 1981, focusing on classic European varietals like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the years, they acquired additional land, expanding their vineyards to include a diverse range of grape varietals, including Syrah, Merlot, Sangiovese, and more.

In 1984, the couple officially established Woof'n Rose Winery, named after their own last name and inspired by the beautiful rose gardens that adorned their property. Helen and Robert were firm believers in sustainable farming practices, utilizing organic methods and implementing environmentally friendly techniques long before it became a popular trend.

The winery quickly gained a reputation for quality wines, with their unique terroir, cool climate, and well-drained soils contributing to the development of grapes with distinctive flavors and balanced acidity. Woof'n Rose Winery's commitment to excellence was recognized with numerous awards and accolades, solidifying their place among California's premier wineries.

Although Helen and Robert Woof have since retired from the winemaking business, their legacy lives on. In recent years, Woof'n Rose Winery has been taken over by their children, Mark and Lisa, who continue their parents' tradition of producing remarkable wines.

Under Mark and Lisa's stewardship, the winery has embraced innovative winemaking techniques while staying true to the family's core values. They have expanded the range of offerings, experimenting with different grape varietals and exploring new wine styles, while always striving to maintain the high standards that have become synonymous with the Woof'n Rose name.

Today, Woof'n Rose Winery stands as a testament to the enduring passion, unwavering dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence displayed by the Woof family. Visitors to the winery can experience the breathtaking beauty of the Sierra Foothills, stroll through the lush rose gardens that started it all, and savor the exceptional wines that reflect the heart and soul of this remarkable winery.

In conclusion, Woof'n Rose Winery's history is a captivating tale of love for the land, devotion to sustainable practices, and a relentless pursuit of crafting exceptional wines. From its humble beginnings in the early 1980s to its present-day success, the winery remains an emblem of the Woof family's unwavering commitment to producing remarkable wines that capture the essence of the Sierra Foothills.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
