Wolfe Heights Estates
History
Wolfe Heights Estates holds a rich and captivating history in California's winemaking heritage. Founded in 1976, this esteemed winery is located in the renowned wine region of Lodi. Known for its commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation, Wolfe Heights Estates has played a pivotal role in shaping the state's wine industry.
The story of Wolfe Heights Estates began when George Wolfe, a passionate wine enthusiast, purchased a small parcel of land in Lodi with a dream of establishing a vineyard. With dedication and perseverance, George tirelessly worked on transforming the barren land into a haven for grape cultivation. He carefully selected premium grape varieties that would flourish in the region's Mediterranean-like climate and ideal soil composition.
The early years were not without challenges. George faced opposition from skeptics who doubted the potential of Lodi as a premier grape-growing region. However, he remained undeterred and focused on proving them wrong. His dedication paid off when in 1982, Wolfe Heights Estates won its first gold medal at a prestigious wine competition.
Embracing the family legacy, George's son, Michael Wolfe, joined the winery in the mid-1990s. Michael brought with him a fresh perspective and a forward-thinking vision. He recognized the importance of sustainable viticulture practices and prioritized environmentally friendly initiatives. Under his leadership, Wolfe Heights Estates became one of the pioneers in Lodi to adopt sustainable farming methods, such as integrated pest management and water conservation techniques. This commitment to the environment not only preserved the land but also enhanced the quality of the grapes and wines produced.
The estate's winemaking philosophy revolves around traditional methods intertwined with modern techniques. The winemakers at Wolfe Heights Estates aim to create wines that reflect the essence of Lodi's unique terroir while infusing them with a distinct character. They achieve this through meticulous grape selection, gentle handling of the fruit, and the use of state-of-the-art winemaking equipment.
The accolades and recognition earned by Wolfe Heights Estates have solidified its position as a standout winery in California. Over the years, the winery has garnered numerous awards for its exceptional wines, including multiple 90+ point ratings from esteemed wine publications. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
