Windsor Oaks Vineyards & Winery, nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California, has a rich and storied history that stretches back over a century. This estate winery embodies the quintessential spirit of California winemaking, celebrating the region's unique terroir, commitment to sustainability, and exceptional winemaking practices.
The history of Windsor Oaks traces back to the late 1800s, when the land on which the winery now sits served as bustling farmland, primarily dedicated to the cultivation of apples and prunes. In the early 20th century, the property was acquired by George McCrea – a visionary entrepreneur who recognized the exceptional potential for growing wine grapes in the Russian River Valley.
McCrea planted the first vineyards on the property in the early 1930s, specializing in Zinfandel, Carignane, and Petite Sirah – varietals that were popular in that era. With meticulous attention to detail and a passion for crafting premium wines, McCrea built a reputation for producing exceptional grapes.
In the 1970s, the property changed hands, and a new owner, Jack Stewart, revitalized the vineyards and expanded the varietal portfolio to include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. Under Stewart's stewardship, Windsor Oaks experienced significant growth, becoming a respected supplier of high-quality grapes to well-known wineries throughout Sonoma County.
In 1991, Windsor Oaks caught the eye of longtime wine enthusiast Bob Stein, who recognized the extraordinary potential of the estate. Stein, along with winemaker Brian Maloney, embarked on an ambitious journey to establish Windsor Oaks as a world-class winery in its own right. They carefully selected additional vineyard sites on the property, including hillside plantings and cooler climate blocks, thus enhancing the winery's ability to produce a diverse range of premium wines.
Moreover, Stein and Maloney implemented sustainable vineyard practices, recognizing the importance of environmental stewardship and the impact it has on the quality of the grapes and wines. These sustainability practices include cover cropping, composting, water conservation, and the use of organic and biodynamic farming methods whenever possible. Windsor Oaks has since become a leader in sustainable vineyard practices within the region.
Today, Windsor Oaks Vineyards & Winery is renowned for its exceptional estate wines. The winery's portfolio includes a wide array of varietals, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Zinfandel, with each wine showcasing the distinct character and terroir of the Russian River Valley.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
