Trefethen Family Vineyards
History
Trefethen Family Vineyards, situated in the heart of Napa Valley, California, has a captivating history that spans over 50 years. Established in 1968 by Eugene and Catherine Trefethen, it is renowned today for producing world-class wines and playing a significant role in the resurgence of Napa Valley as a premier wine region.
The Trefethen family has a rich agricultural background that traces back to the 19th century. They began in livestock farming and fruit orchards in the Midwest. However, it was their move to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-1960s that set the stage for their entry into the wine industry.
Eugene and Catherine Trefethen, captivated by the potential of the Napa Valley as a wine-growing region, purchased a 600-acre estate in Oak Knoll District in 1968. Inspired by the beauty and the unique terroir of the region, they aimed to create wines that would exhibit the true character of Napa Valley.
Initially, the Trefethens sold their grapes to prominent wineries in Napa, but by the mid-1970s, they decided to venture into winemaking themselves. They renovated an old winery on their estate and became one of the few wineries in the region to be entirely family-owned and operated.
Their commitment to quality and innovation soon yielded impressive results. In 1979, Trefethen Chardonnay won the prestigious International Wine Competition in France, beating renowned French counterparts and putting Napa Valley on the global wine map. The victory was groundbreaking and marked a turning point for Napa Valley wines, helping to establish their credibility on an international level.
Sadly, tragedy struck in September 1989, when a devastating earthquake struck Napa Valley. The Trefethen winery sustained significant damage, including the complete demolition of their historic three-story wooden winery building. However, this setback only strengthened their resolve. The family rebuilt their winery with meticulous attention to detail, preserving the architectural beauty while incorporating modern technology to further enhance their winemaking practices.
Over the years, Trefethen Family Vineyards has continued to evolve and expand. Today, it encompasses approximately 600 acres, of which around 400 acres are planted with vineyards. The estate harbors a diverse range of grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Riesling.
One of the defining aspects of Trefethen's winemaking philosophy is their dedication to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. In 2008, they received the prestigious California Green Medal Leader Award, recognizing their outstanding commitment to sustainability in the wine industry.
Trefethen wines are known for their elegance, balance, and ability to reflect the unique terroir of Napa Valley. The flagship wine, Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon, exemplifies the estate's dedication to excellence. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, it showcases the bold fruit flavors, refined tannins, and harmonious structure that have become synonymous with the Trefethen name.
Today, Trefethen Family Vineyards stands as a testament to the Trefethen family's unwavering perseverance, passion, and commitment to producing exceptional wines. As a true pioneer in Napa Valley winemaking, they continue to craft wines that speak to the region's rich history and capture the spirit of this extraordinary viticultural area.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
