Thornton Winery
History
Thornton Winery holds a significant place in the history of California's winemaking industry. Situated in Temecula Valley, Southern California, Thornton Winery has evolved over the years to become one of the region's most esteemed and renowned wineries. Its rich history began in the early 1980s, when a passionate couple named Dr. James and Bunny Thornton embarked on a journey to create world-class sparkling wines.
The Thorntons transformed a modest vineyard property into a budding winery, focusing primarily on producing sparkling wines. In 1984, they officially established Thornton Winery and expanded their vineyards, aiming to craft exceptional wines that could rival those of established European producers. With their meticulous attention to detail and uncompromising commitment to quality, the Thorntons quickly gained recognition for their outstanding méthode champenoise sparkling wines.
As the demand for their sparkling wines continued to grow, the Thorntons realized the immense potential of the Temecula Valley region for producing other varietals. They expanded their vineyards beyond the traditional Champagne grapes, planting Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This diversification allowed Thornton Winery to broaden its offerings and appeal to a wider range of wine enthusiasts.
In 1988, the Thorntons, together with winemaker Jon McPherson, crafted the first vintage of their iconic Cuvée Rouge, a Bordeaux-style red blend that garnered critical acclaim and became an instant hit among wine connoisseurs. This marked a turning point for Thornton Winery, as their red wines gained recognition and further solidified their reputation in the industry.
Over the years, Thornton Winery has continued to innovate and introduce new winemaking techniques to further enhance the quality of their wines. They were among the first wineries in California to adopt state-of-the-art temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for more precise fermentation control. Additionally, they embraced the use of French oak barrels for aging, adding complexity and depth to their wines.
Thornton Winery's commitment to excellence extends beyond winemaking. In 1996, they built a stunning Mediterranean-style champagne cellar, modeled after the beautiful caves of the Champagne region in France, providing an idyllic setting for guests to explore and enjoy their wines. The winery also became renowned for hosting acclaimed concert series, where visitors could revel in the harmonies of world-class musicians while savoring Thornton's exceptional wines.
Through the dedication and passion of its founders, Thornton Winery has become a true pioneer in Temecula Valley and played a vital role in establishing the region as a respected winegrowing area. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
