The Accidental Winery
History
The Accidental Winery's history is rich and fascinating, highlighting both the perseverance of its founders and the unpredictable nature of winemaking in California. It all began in the late 1970s with a chance encounter between two friends, Jack Anderson and Sarah Thompson, who unintentionally stumbled upon their passion for winemaking.
Jack Anderson, a successful businessman from San Francisco, had recently retired and was eager to explore new hobbies. He decided to embark on a road trip through California's wine country, hoping to learn more about viticulture and winemaking. On his journey, he stopped at various wineries and vineyards, soaking in the knowledge and immersing himself in the world of wine.
During his travels, Jack happened upon a small, dilapidated vineyard nestled in the coastal hills of Northern California. The property, forsaken and overgrown, had once been a thriving winery in the early 20th century but had sadly fallen into disrepair. The vineyard's original owner had passed away years ago without any documented heirs, leaving the land abandoned and forgotten.
Intrigued by the vineyard's potential, Jack decided to venture onto the property, exploring the ruins of what was once a bustling winemaking operation. To his surprise, amidst the overgrown vines and crumbling infrastructure, he discovered a hidden cellar filled with aging oak barrels, remnants of the vineyard's former glory.
Amazed by this unexpected find, Jack felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to restore the vineyard and revive its winemaking heritage. However, he knew little about winemaking, and this is where fate intervened. On his return to San Francisco, he shared his discovery with his friend, Sarah Thompson, who had just completed a viticulture course at a nearby college.
Sarah, a passionate and talented winemaker, immediately saw the potential in Jack's accidental discovery. Together, they embarked on a journey to transform the forgotten vineyard into a thriving winery. With meticulous research, hard work, and unwavering determination, Jack and Sarah began the laborious process of rejuvenating the vineyard.
They enlisted the help of viticulture experts, local farmers, and experienced winemakers who shared their enthusiasm for the project. Together, they meticulously pruned the neglected vines, replaced damaged trellises, and revitalized the vineyard's infrastructure. Simultaneously, Jack and Sarah poured over winemaking books, attended seminars, and honed their skills, determined to produce exceptional wines.
Despite numerous challenges, including inclement weather, pests, and the steep learning curve involved in winemaking, The Accidental Winery's first vintage was released in 1982. It was met with critical acclaim, surprising even Jack and Sarah, who had modest expectations given their relative inexperience.
With each passing vintage, The Accidental Winery's reputation grew, attracting wine enthusiasts and collectors from across the United States and beyond. Critics praised the winery's commitment to sustainable farming practices, attention to detail, and the exceptional quality of its wines.
Over the years, The Accidental Winery expanded its portfolio, introducing new varietals and blending techniques. They pioneered environmentally-friendly initiatives, implementing solar energy and water conservation measures throughout the winery. Their dedication to quality and the environment earned them numerous awards and certifications, solidifying their status as one of California's most esteemed wineries.
Today, The Accidental Winery stands as a symbol of perseverance, passion, and the unpredictability inherent in winemaking. Jack Anderson and Sarah Thompson's accidental discovery transformed a forgotten vineyard into a renowned winery, leaving an enduring legacy in California's winemaking history.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
