Summerwood Winery and Inn
History
Summerwood Winery and Inn is a charming and picturesque winery nestled in the heart of Paso Robles wine country, California. Known for its exceptional wines and tranquil accommodations, Summerwood has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several decades.
The story of Summerwood Winery and Inn begins in the late 1970s when the Hox family purchased a 100-acre parcel of land in Paso Robles. At the time, the region was not as well-known for winemaking as it is today. However, the Hoxes saw potential in the area's unique climate and soil, which seemed perfect for cultivating high-quality wine grapes.
With the vision of creating a premium winery, the Hox family planted their first vineyards on the property in the early 1980s. They focused on varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, carefully selecting clones and rootstocks to match the terroir of Paso Robles. The family's dedication to viticulture and sustainable farming practices quickly earned them a reputation as pioneers in the region.
In 2002, the Hox family decided to take their winemaking endeavors to the next level by building a state-of-the-art winery facility on their property. They enlisted the expertise of renowned architect John Mitchell to design a winery that seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings. The result was a beautiful structure with earthy tones and rustic charm, perfectly complementing the vineyards and nearby Paso Robles hills.
With the completion of the winery, Summerwood was officially born in 2005. The name "Summerwood" was chosen to reflect the essence of the winery – a place where the warm summer days and cool evening breezes create optimal growing conditions for grapes.
Under the guidance of winemaker Mauricio Marchant, Summerwood Winery quickly gained recognition for its exceptional wines. Mauricio, originally from Chile, brings his extensive winemaking experience and passion for the craft to create wines that showcase the unique characteristics of Paso Robles. From bold and structured reds to crisp and refreshing whites, the portfolio of wines at Summerwood offers something for every wine lover.
Not content with simply being a winery, Summerwood expanded its offerings by opening an inn on the property in 2009. The inn exudes a warm and welcoming ambiance, with luxurious accommodations nestled within the vineyards. Guests can indulge in wine tasting experiences, explore the picturesque grounds, and unwind in the serene countryside setting. The inn also features a beautiful garden, swimming pool, and a private oak grove, providing guests with a truly immersive wine country experience.
Today, Summerwood Winery and Inn continues to thrive as a family-owned and operated business. The Hox family's commitment to sustainable farming, attention to detail in winemaking, and warm hospitality ensure that visitors and wine enthusiasts have an unforgettable experience.
Whether you are seeking a relaxing weekend getaway, a scenic venue for a wedding or special event, or simply wish to savor world-class wines, Summerwood Winery and Inn is a must-visit destination in Paso Robles wine country. With its storied history, breathtaking views, and exceptional wines, Summerwood continues to be a beloved fixture in California's vibrant winemaking scene.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
