Story Winery History

Story Winery, also known as Story Vineyards, is a historic family-owned winery tucked away in the breathtaking Sierra Foothills of California. With roots dating back to the mid-1800s, the winery has an illustrious history that intertwines the region's rich winemaking heritage with the Story family's deep connection to the land.

The story begins with the arrival of the Zinfandel grape variety in California during the Gold Rush era. In the mid-1850s, Edward Edwin Story, a pioneer from England, settled in Amador County, where he saw the potential of the region's unique terroir for grape cultivation. He planted the first vineyards on the rocky slopes of the region, embracing the rugged beauty of the Sierra Foothills to create his own piece of paradise.

However, tragedy struck in the late 19th century when phylloxera, a devastating vineyard pest, ravaged the Story family's vineyards. Many vineyards throughout California were decimated during this time, and the setback forced the family to focus on mining and other ventures for several decades.

Fast forward to the 1970s when Susan and Nicholas Karavidas, whose lineage traces back to the Story family, decided to revive their family's winemaking legacy. They embarked on a mission to restore the original vineyards and resurrect the winery. In 1973, Story Winery was born, marking a new chapter in the rich history of California winemaking.

The Karavidas family was determined to not only preserve the legacy of their ancestors but also to create exceptional wines that showcase the unique characteristics of the Sierra Foothills. They meticulously replanted the vineyards and focused on cultivating old vine Zinfandel, which thrives in the region's rugged and diverse soils. The family's dedication to sustainable farming practices and low-intervention winemaking soon garnered recognition and accolades for their wines.

Over the years, Story Winery has grown and flourished, embracing traditional winemaking techniques while embracing modern innovations. Today, the winery remains family-owned and managed by returning native son, Rob Campbell. Campbell, a fourth-generation member of the Karavidas family, carries on the legacy set forth by his ancestors, ensuring the winery's continued success and commitment to crafting exceptional wines.

The terroir of Story Winery's vineyards is characterized by the unique combination of decomposed granite and sandy loam soils. The warm days and cool nights, typical of the Sierra Foothills microclimate, contribute to the distinctive flavor profile and complex aromatics found in their wines. The winery specializes in producing handcrafted Zinfandels, as well as other varietals such as Barbera, Mourvèdre, and Primitivo.

Visiting Story Winery is not only a journey back in time but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of the Sierra Foothills. The winery's rustic tasting room, housed in a restored 1860s farmhouse, offers guests a warm and inviting ambiance to savor and appreciate the handcrafted wines. The estate also features a charming picnic area, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the picturesque vineyards.

Story Winery stands as a testament to the resilience, passion, and unwavering dedication of the Story family and their descendants. Its rich history and commitment to producing exceptional wines have cemented its place as a cherished gem in the Sierra Foothills wine region, allowing visitors to experience the true essence of California winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
