Another distinguishing feature of Steven Kent Winery is the meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into the winemaking process. They prioritize traditional winemaking techniques and maintain a hands-on approach throughout the entire process, ensuring that the wines retain their integrity and authenticity.

The winery's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship also sets them apart. Steven Kent Winery strives to minimize their ecological footprint by implementing sustainable farming practices, including organic and biodynamic farming methods whenever possible. Moreover, Steven Kent Winery takes great pride in their long-standing relationships with the grape growers they collaborate with. They believe that exceptional wines can only be achieved by partnering with passionate and dedicated growers who share the same commitment to quality. This collaborative approach enables them to source the finest grapes from renowned vineyards across California, including the prestigious Livermore Valley, where the winery is located.

In addition to their exceptional wines and sustainable practices, Steven Kent Winery offers visitors a memorable and immersive experience. The winery's picturesque location amidst rolling hills, lush vineyards, and oak-studded landscapes creates a breathtaking setting for wine tastings and events. Guests can enjoy guided tours, participate in educational seminars, or simply relax and savor the wines in the inviting tasting room or outdoor patio.

Last but not least, the winery's legacy and history further contribute to its uniqueness. Named after the founder's son, Steven Kent Mirassou, the winery has deep roots in California winemaking dating back to 1916 when the family first planted vines in the Livermore Valley. This rich heritage, combined with a contemporary approach to winemaking, creates a truly distinct identity for Steven Kent Winery.

Steven Kent Winery History

Steven Kent Winery, located in the Livermore Valley wine region of California, has a rich and captivating history that spans several decades. The winery was founded by Steven Kent Mirassou, a member of California's historic Mirassou family, who have been involved in winemaking for over 165 years.

The roots of Steven Kent Winery can be traced back to the mid-19th century when the Mirassou family first emigrated from France to California. They settled in the Santa Clara Valley and began growing grapes and producing wine. The Mirassou name soon became synonymous with quality winemaking, and their wines gained recognition throughout the region.

Fast forward to the 1970s, when the Livermore Valley was experiencing a revival as a winegrowing region. Steven Kent Mirassou recognized the untapped potential of this area and decided to establish his own winery. In 1996, he founded Mirassou Vineyards, inspired by his family's legacy and fueled by a passion for crafting exquisite wines.

Under the Mirassou Vineyards label, Steven Kent focused on producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, varieties for which the Mirassou family had become well-known. However, as the years went by, Steven Kent began to explore other varietals, seeking to create wines that truly showcased the unique characteristics of the Livermore Valley.

In 2007, Steven Kent made the decision to consolidate his focus and rebranded the winery as Steven Kent Winery. This move allowed him to further specialize in producing small-lot, estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, arguably the flagship varietal of the Livermore Valley.

Steven Kent's vision for the winery became realized with the development of the Ghielmetti Vineyard, a vineyard dedicated exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon. This vineyard not only provided high-quality grapes for Steven Kent Winery but also played a significant role in elevating the reputation of the Livermore Valley as a premier Cabernet Sauvignon-producing region.

The dedication to excellence and commitment to showcasing the unique terroir of the Livermore Valley led Steven Kent Winery to become one of the most respected and sought-after wineries in California. With each vintage, they strive to express the distinct characteristics of their vineyards, producing wines that embody the rich history and passion of the Mirassou family.

Today, under the ownership and stewardship of Steven Kent Mirassou and his team, the winery continues to flourish. The focus remains on producing small-lot, single-vineyard wines that reflect the diversity and potential of the Livermore Valley. Steven Kent Winery has garnered numerous accolades and awards, solidifying its reputation as a producer of exceptional wines.

Steven Kent Winery stands as a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and vision of Steven Kent Mirassou, carrying on the Mirassou family tradition of crafting remarkable wines in California. Its history not only showcases the evolution of the winery but also captures the spirit of Livermore Valley winemaking, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking a taste of California's vinicultural heritage.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
