Silver Wines
History
Silver Wines, located in Santa Barbara County, California, has a rich and captivating history that spans several decades. Founded in 1985 by winemaker Andrew Murray, this boutique winery has earned a well-deserved reputation for producing exceptional handcrafted wines that truly represent the unique terroir of the region.
Andrew Murray, a native of Santa Barbara and a passionate wine enthusiast, started his journey in the wine industry at a young age. He was first introduced to winemaking by his father, a wine importer, and developed a deep appreciation for the intricacies of grape cultivation and winemaking techniques. After gaining experience working in vineyards throughout Europe, Andrew returned to his roots in Santa Barbara, eager to make his mark.
In the early days, Silver Wines was a small, family-run operation focused on producing wines primarily from Rhône varietals. Andrew Murray was inspired by the Old World winemaking practices of France's Rhône Valley and believed that the diverse microclimates and soils of Santa Barbara County could produce similarly outstanding results.
Silver Wines quickly gained recognition for its commitment to quality and innovative winemaking techniques. Andrew Murray's ability to carefully select and blend grapes from different vineyards allowed him to create complex and balanced wines that captivated wine enthusiasts and experts alike. His dedication to viticulture and sustainable farming practices also ensured that the vineyards he worked with produced the highest-quality fruit.
Over the years, Silver Wines expanded its portfolio, branching out into a wider range of varietals while staying true to its commitment to crafting wines that expressed the region's terroir. The winery's signature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir gained critical acclaim and became favorites among wine lovers.
In 2017, Andrew Murray made the decision to transition out of the wine business, passing the torch to a new generation of winemakers. Todd Bostock, a highly respected winemaker and viticulturist, took over the reins and became the proprietor of Silver Wines. Under Todd's guidance and with his extensive knowledge of the region, Silver Wines continued to thrive and evolve.
Todd Bostock brought his own unique perspective to Silver Wines, implementing biodynamic farming practices and focusing on minimal intervention winemaking. This approach allowed the true character of the grapes and the vineyard sites to shine through in each bottle of Silver Wines.
Today, Silver Wines remains dedicated to its founder's vision of producing exceptional wines that reflect the beauty and complexity of Santa Barbara County. The winery continues to source grapes from top vineyards throughout the region and is committed to sustainable farming, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the bountiful flavors of their wines.
Whether it is their elegant Chardonnay, velvety Pinot Noir, or robust Rhône-style blends, Silver Wines continues to delight wine enthusiasts with its commitment to crafting wines of the highest quality. Through its rich history and unwavering dedication to excellence, Silver Wines has become a true gem in the California wine industry, capturing the essence of Santa Barbara County in every bottle.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
