Shannon Family of Wines History

The Shannon Family of Wines is an acclaimed winery nestled in sunny California, known for its exceptional quality wines and rich heritage. With a history dating back to the early 20th century, the Shannon family legacy has been one of passion, perseverance, and innovation.

The story of the Shannon Family of Wines begins with Joseph Shannon, an Irish immigrant who arrived in California in the late 1800s. He quickly recognized the potential of the pristine Sonoma Valley and its bountiful vineyards. Inspired by his love for wine, Joseph acquired a small plot of land in the heart of Sonoma and planted his first vineyard.

With dedication and hard work, Joseph Shannon managed to develop his vineyard into a successful operation, producing high-quality grapes for other winemakers in the region. However, his dream was to create his own unique wines, reflective of the Sonoma terroir.

In the mid-20th century, Joseph's grandson, William Shannon, took over the family business. William was a visionary with a strong desire to make a mark in the wine industry. Recognizing the changing dynamics and growing demand for premium wines, he decided to establish his own winery and brand.

William Shannon embarked on a quest to learn from the best in the industry, traveling to renowned wine regions around the world to gain knowledge and inspiration. His passion for winemaking grew, and he returned to Sonoma Valley armed with innovative techniques and a desire to create exceptional wines that would showcase the region's unique character.

In 1976, Shannon Family Wines was officially founded, marking a new chapter in the family's winemaking journey. William Shannon's commitment to sustainable farming and precision winemaking techniques set the winery apart from others in the region. He believed that great wines begin with the land, and he meticulously nurtured his vineyards to produce grapes of exceptional quality.

Shannon Family Wines quickly gained recognition for their outstanding craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to sustainable practices. They focused on producing small-lot, handcrafted wines that highlighted the nuances of each varietal. With an emphasis on sustainability, the winery became one of the early pioneers in organic and biodynamic farming practices.

Over the years, the Shannon family's dedication paid off, and their wines garnered numerous accolades and awards. The winery's flagship varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, became highly sought after by wine enthusiasts and collectors alike. Each wine produced by the Shannon Family of Wines became a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence.

Today, the Shannon family legacy continues with William Shannon's daughter, Sarah Shannon, at the helm of the winery. Sarah represents the fourth generation of the Shannon family and is deeply passionate about preserving her family's heritage while pursuing new horizons in winemaking.

Under Sarah's leadership, Shannon Family Wines has expanded its vineyard holdings, acquiring additional plots in prime winegrowing regions across California. This expansion has allowed them to experiment with new varietals and further elevate the quality of their wines.

Despite their growth and success, the Shannon family remains dedicated to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. They have implemented a range of initiatives aimed at reducing their footprint, including wildlife conservation projects and water conservation efforts.

The Shannon Family of Wines continues to be a symbol of excellence in the California wine industry, upholding the ancestral values of quality, integrity, and innovation. With each vintage, they pay homage to their rich history while pushing the boundaries of winemaking, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
