Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery History

Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery is nestled in the picturesque town of Warner Springs, California, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the high desert and the soaring Laguna Mountains. Established in 1943 by wine enthusiasts William (Bill) and Brenda Holzhauer, this charming winery boasts a rich history and a deep commitment to producing exceptional wines.

Bill and Brenda Holzhauer's passion for winemaking stemmed from their shared love for the land and their belief in the potential of the Warner Springs region to produce exquisite grapes. Inspired by the vineyards they had seen during their travels through Europe, they decided to embark on an adventure to establish their own winery in California.

When they first acquired the property, the area was primarily known for its cattle ranches and vast open spaces. Undeterred, the Holzhauers planted their first vineyard, which consisted of a few acres of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot vines. They tirelessly worked the land, carefully tending to the vines and learning the nuances of winemaking.

Over the years, Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery steadily grew in both size and reputation. The Holzhauers' unwavering dedication to producing exceptional wines paid off, and their wines began receiving acclaim and recognition. Their commitment to quality and sustainability earned them a loyal following of wine enthusiasts, both locally and beyond.

In the 1980s, the second generation of the Holzhauer family, Jerry and Judy, took the reins of the winery. Building upon their parents' legacy, Jerry and Judy expanded the vineyards, introducing new grape varietals and utilizing innovative winemaking techniques. They embraced the art of blending, creating unique and complex wines that captured the essence of the Warner Springs terroir.

Under Jerry and Judy's guidance, Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery became renowned for its elegant red wines, particularly its Bordeaux-style blends. Their flagship wine, Shadow Mountain Vineyards Heritage, quickly gained a reputation as one of California's finest wines, with its rich layers of dark fruit, velvety tannins, and lingering finish.

In recent years, the third generation, represented by Brian and Susan Holzhauer, has taken on a more prominent role in the winery's operations. Brian and Susan have focused on sustainable farming practices, utilizing organic and biodynamic methods to cultivate their vineyards. This respect for the land has allowed the winery to produce wines of exceptional quality while preserving the fragile ecosystem surrounding the vineyards.

Visiting Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery is a truly rewarding experience. With its rustic yet charming tasting room, visitors can immerse themselves in the history and heritage of the winery. The knowledgeable and friendly staff are passionate about sharing the story of Shadow Mountain and guiding visitors through their exceptional wine portfolio.

Today, Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery stands as a testament to the Holzhauers' vision and determination. Their commitment to quality winemaking, sustainable practices, and their love for the land has solidified their place among California's most esteemed wineries. It is a destination where wine lovers can discover and savor wines that embody the essence of the Warner Springs region, leaving visitors with an indelible appreciation for the art and science of winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
