Sequoia Grove Winery History

Sequoia Grove Winery, located in the heart of Napa Valley, California, has a rich and captivating history that stretches back several decades. Founded in 1979 by Jim Allen, initially as a farming operation, the winery underwent a remarkable transformation to become one of the region's premier wineries known for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jim Allen, a visionary and a true wine enthusiast, recognized the potential of Napa Valley to produce world-class wines. With a passion for winemaking, Allen planted his first vineyard on the Rutherford Bench, an area famous for its unique terroir that contributes to the development of exceptional grapes. Although initially focusing on grape growing, Allen felt the urge to explore winemaking and decided to create his own wine brand.

In 1980, Sequoia Grove released its inaugural vintage, a 1980 Cabernet Sauvignon, marking the winery's official entry into the wine industry. From the very beginning, Allen's commitment to crafting wines of exceptional quality was evident in every bottle. He aimed to produce wines that showcased the unique characteristics of the Rutherford Bench, emphasizing structure, balance, and elegance.

Over the years, Sequoia Grove flourished under Allen's careful guidance. The winery gained a reputation for consistently producing outstanding wines that reflected the distinctiveness of its terroir. This success led Allen to expand his vineyard holdings, acquiring prime grape-growing land throughout Napa Valley. Today, Sequoia Grove cultivates vineyards in the Rutherford, Oakville, St. Helena, and Carneros AVAs, each contributing to the diverse range of wines produced.

Under the leadership of Allen and subsequent winemakers, including Michael Trujillo and Molly Hill, Sequoia Grove continued to garner critical acclaim and accolades. The winery's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices further set it apart. Sequoia Grove implemented several sustainable initiatives, including organic farming techniques, the use of cover crops, and water conservation measures. These efforts earned the winery recognition for its dedication to environmental stewardship.

In 2001, an exciting development occurred when the Cambria Estate vineyards and winery, renowned for its exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, acquired Sequoia Grove. The collaboration between Cambria and Sequoia Grove allowed both wineries to leverage their respective strengths and expand their reach in the wine world.

Sequoia Grove's commitment to quality and expertise in Cabernet Sauvignon production has remained unwavering throughout its history. The winery's signature wine, the Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon, has become a benchmark for Napa Valley Cabernets, recognized for its depth, complexity, and age-worthiness.

Today, Sequoia Grove Winery continues its legacy of producing exceptional wines that capture the essence of Napa Valley. With a focus on sustainable practices, respect for the land, and a commitment to producing wines of outstanding quality, this historic winery remains an icon in the ever-evolving world of California winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
