Secret Ravine Vineyards
History
Secret Ravine Vineyards is a renowned winery nestled in the picturesque region of California. Its rich history dates back to the late 19th century when the land was first settled. The story behind Secret Ravine Vineyards begins with the arrival of the pioneering Smith family in the early 1870s.
John and Elizabeth Smith, along with their children, migrated from the East Coast in search of a promising future in the fertile lands of California. Drawn to the natural beauty of the region, they purchased a large parcel of land in what is now known as Placer County. Little did they know that this land would become the foundation of a thriving winemaking venture.
The Smith family recognized the potential of their land for viticulture due to its ideal climate, fertile soil, and proximity to the American River. They soon planted their first grapevines, including varietals like Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay, which thrived in the Mediterranean-like climate of Placer County.
With dedication and passion for winemaking, the Smiths turned their modest vineyard into a successful winery. They named it Secret Ravine Vineyards, as the property featured a hidden ravine that became a local secret due to its scenic beauty and serenity. This name would later become synonymous with excellence in winemaking.
As word of their exceptional wines spread, Secret Ravine Vineyards gained recognition beyond the local community. Their wines consistently won awards in regional wine competitions, solidifying the winery's reputation for producing high-quality vintages.
However, like many wineries, Secret Ravine Vineyards faced challenges throughout its history. In the early 20th century, during the Prohibition era, the winery was forced to halt its wine production. The Smith family cleverly transitioned to growing table grapes and stayed afloat during this turbulent time.
After the repeal of Prohibition, Secret Ravine Vineyards made a triumphant return to winemaking. With renewed dedication, the family revived its vineyards, refurbished the winery facilities, and reestablished their portfolio of classic and innovative wines.
Over the years, Secret Ravine Vineyards has continued to innovate and evolve, combining traditional winemaking techniques with modern technology to craft exceptional wines. The winery now boasts a diverse range of varietals, from their signature Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon to lesser-known gems like Viognier and Sangiovese.
Today, Secret Ravine Vineyards remains a family-owned and operated winery, proudly preserving the legacy and traditions passed down through generations. Visitors to the winery can explore the stunning vineyards, sample a variety of wines in the tastefully designed tasting room, and learn about the winemaking process from the knowledgeable staff.
Secret Ravine Vineyards' commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is evident in their vineyard practices as well. The winery utilizes organic farming techniques, minimizes water consumption, and employs responsible waste management strategies, ensuring a healthier ecosystem for both the grapes and the surrounding community.
With its rich history, dedication to tradition, and commitment to quality, Secret Ravine Vineyards continues to be an emblem of the California wine industry. Its wines are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and sense of place, making a visit to Secret Ravine Vineyards a must for wine enthusiasts wanting to experience the beauty and charm of California winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
