Rodney Strong Vineyards History

Rodney Strong Vineyards, located in Sonoma County, California, has a rich and multifaceted history spanning over six decades. The winery was founded by Rodney D. Strong, an iconic figure in the California wine industry, who played a crucial role in establishing Sonoma County as a leading winemaking region.

Rodney D. Strong was born in 1927 in Los Angeles and developed an early passion for music, becoming a skilled classical dancer and pursuing a career in ballet. However, after an injury, Strong redirected his interests towards the world of wine. Inspired by a bottle of 1941 Château d'Yquem, he decided to embark on a journey to become a winemaker.

In the early 1950s, Strong enrolled in the prestigious enology program at the University of California, Davis, where he gained invaluable knowledge and experience in viticulture and winemaking techniques. Upon completing his studies, Strong joined Ernest and Julio Gallo, one of the largest wine producers in California, as their first-ever research enologist.

Having gained expertise and a deep understanding of winemaking, Strong sought to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions. In 1959, he purchased a 160-acre property in Windsor, Sonoma County, and established Rodney Strong Vineyards. This was a bold move, as the region was relatively unknown for producing high-quality wines at the time.

Strong's vision was to craft world-class wines that would rival those from established wine regions, such as Napa Valley. He planted his vineyards with classic Bordeaux grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This decision to focus on Bordeaux varietals ensured that Rodney Strong Vineyards stood out from other wineries in the area.

The early years posed numerous challenges for Rodney Strong Vineyards. The winery faced several financial setbacks, including a devastating flood that destroyed much of the property. Strong's determination and tenacity, however, persevered through these trials. He rebuilt the winery, expanded the vineyards, and in 1970, released his first vintage of Rodney Strong Chardonnay.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Rodney Strong Vineyards gained recognition for the exceptional quality of its wines. Under Strong's stewardship, the winery's reputation soared, and its wines began to earn accolades both domestically and internationally.

In 1989, Rodney Strong made a pivotal decision by partnering with Tom Klein, a successful entrepreneur and wine enthusiast. The Klein family brought not only financial stability but also a shared dedication to upholding the winery's legacy of excellence. Together, they expanded the scope of Rodney Strong Vineyards and elevated its prominence through strategic investments.

Under the Klein family's leadership, the winery focused on innovative viticultural practices, sustainable farming, and state-of-the-art winemaking techniques. In 2003, Rodney Strong Vineyards became the first carbon-neutral winery in Sonoma County, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Today, Rodney Strong Vineyards remains a leading force in the California wine industry. The winery's portfolio boasts an impressive range of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and more. They continue to receive critical acclaim and have amassed a dedicated following of wine aficionados around the world.

Rodney Strong Vineyards serves as a testament to the enduring vision and passion of its founder, Rodney D. Strong. His unwavering commitment to crafting exceptional wines, along with the continued dedication of the Klein family, has firmly established the winery as a cornerstone in the history and legacy of Sonoma County winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
