Robert Mondavi Winery
History
Robert Mondavi Winery, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for its pioneering role in bringing recognition and acclaim to California wines on a global scale. The history of Robert Mondavi Winery is a fascinating tale that spans generations, showcasing the visionary spirit of its founder, Robert Mondavi, and his dedication to creating exceptional wines.
The story of Robert Mondavi Winery begins in 1966 when Robert Mondavi, already a respected member of the California wine industry, decided to pursue his dream of establishing his own winery. Born into a family of Italian immigrants, wine was in Mondavi's blood. He grew up in the historic Charles Krug Winery, founded by his father Cesare Mondavi in 1943.
However, tensions between Robert and his brother Peter, who co-managed Charles Krug Winery, led to a family dispute that ultimately led to Robert's departure from the family business. Armed with determination and a deep passion for winemaking, Robert Mondavi ventured out on his own and acquired the historic Charles Krug Vineyard site, where he founded the Robert Mondavi Winery.
This milestone marked the beginning of a new era for California wines. Robert Mondavi embraced modern winemaking techniques and introduced innovative practices, challenging the traditional mindset associated with California wines during that time. He firmly believed in the concept of "terroir" and sought to showcase the unique characteristics of Napa Valley in his wines.
At the heart of the winery's philosophy was the pursuit of excellence. Robert Mondavi assembled a talented team that shared his commitment to quality, including his eldest son, Michael Mondavi, who became an integral part of the winemaking process. Together, they worked tirelessly to redefine the potential of California wines.
Robert Mondavi Winery gained international acclaim throughout the 1970s, establishing a reputation for producing world-class wines. It became the pioneer in creating and popularizing the first-ever varietal-labeled wines in California, emphasizing the grape variety on the label rather than generic terms. This groundbreaking approach revolutionized the industry and firmly positioned California wines at the forefront.
The winery's dedication to education and outreach played a vital role in shaping the perception of California wines. Robert Mondavi Winery introduced educational and cultural programs, creating a space where visitors could immerse themselves in the world of wine, art, and food. It became a destination for wine lovers and enthusiasts from around the globe, offering tours, tastings, and the renowned Great Chefs program, which brought together culinary talents from across the world.
Robert Mondavi's vision extended beyond his own winery. He actively contributed to the elevation of Napa Valley's reputation as a wine region, spearheading initiatives to promote collaboration and exchange among winemakers. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Napa Valley Wine Auction, a charitable event that raised funds for local initiatives and put Napa Valley on the map as a premier wine destination.
In 2004, after several decades of shaping the California wine industry, the Robert Mondavi Winery faced a significant turning point. The family made the difficult decision to sell the winery to Constellation Brands, a move sparked by the need for financial resources to expand and compete in the increasingly competitive market.
Under Constellation Brands' ownership, Robert Mondavi Winery continues to flourish, upholding the legacy and traditions established by its founder. The winery remains committed to crafting wines of distinction, honoring the unique attributes of Napa Valley's terroir while embracing technological advancements and sustainable practices.
Today, Robert Mondavi Winery stands as a testament to the visionary spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence exemplified by its founder. It remains an iconic institution in the world of California wines, celebrated for its exceptional vintages, commitment to education, and unwavering dedication to quality.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
