Renwood Winery History

Renwood Winery, nestled in the historic Amador County wine region of California, boasts a rich and captivating history that intertwines with the legacy of winemaking in the state. The story of Renwood Winery dates back to the mid-19th century, when European settlers flocked to the area in search of gold. Little did they know that the fertile soils and ideal climate of the region would become the foundation for flourishing vineyards.

The roots of Renwood Winery can be traced back to 1859 when the region's first winery, the Sobon Estate, was founded. The Sobon family acquired land in the Shenandoah Valley and planted vineyards that thrived in the Mediterranean-like climate. The family's winemaking tradition survived through the generations, eventually leading to the establishment of Renwood Winery in 1993.

Renwood Winery was founded by Robert Smerling, a visionary wine enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the history and potential of Amador County's vineyards. Smerling recognized the outstanding quality of the region's Zinfandel grapes and seized the opportunity to create exceptional wines. He purchased the historic property, which was originally covered by vineyards in the late 1800s, and set out to revive the winemaking legacy that had been dormant for decades.

Under Smerling's guidance, Renwood Winery quickly gained recognition for its commitment to producing world-class Zinfandels. The winery focused on sustainable farming methods, preserving the unique terroir of Amador County, and crafting wines that showcased the full expression of the region's grapes. Renwood's flagship wine, the Renwood Grandpère Zinfandel, became highly acclaimed, solidifying the winery's reputation as a producer of premium Zinfandel.

The success of Renwood Winery drew the attention of wine industry veterans, and in the early 2000s, renowned winemakers Gary and Kathy (Kathy Lynn) Renquist joined the team. Their expertise and passion further elevated the quality and reputation of Renwood wines. Their unique approach to winemaking, with a focus on minimal intervention and meticulous attention to detail, allowed the natural characteristics of the grapes to shine through in each bottle.

Through the years, Renwood Winery expanded its portfolio beyond Zinfandel to include other varietals, such as Syrah, Barbera, and Viognier. This diversification allowed the winery to showcase the versatility of Amador County's vineyards and cater to a broader range of wine enthusiasts.

In 2011, Renwood Winery underwent a significant transformation when it was acquired by the pioneering wine entrepreneur, Alejandro Ochoa. Ochoa recognized the winery's immense potential and made substantial investments in vineyard management and winemaking facilities. His commitment to sustainable farming and innovative winemaking techniques further solidified Renwood's position as a leading producer in Amador County.

Today, Renwood Winery continues to flourish, guided by Ochoa's passion for excellence and the talented winemaking team. The winery's beautiful estate attracts visitors from around the world, offering an idyllic setting for tastings, tours, and events. Renwood's wines have earned numerous accolades, and the winery remains dedicated to producing exceptional wines that embody the spirit and character of Amador County.

Renwood Winery's empowering journey reflects the resilience of the Amador County wine region and its ability to thrive in an ever-changing industry. Its commitment to quality, respect for tradition, and continuous innovation make it a true gem in the California winemaking landscape. As the legacy of Renwood Winery continues to unfold, it serves as a testament to the timeless allure of Amador County's vineyards and the passion of those who shape its history.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
