Ramspur Winery History

Ramspur Winery is a charming and historic winery located in Southern California, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Temecula Valley. With a rich and intriguing history dating back several decades, Ramspur Winery has established itself as a prominent player in the California wine industry.

The story of Ramspur Winery begins in the late 1960s when Marvin Johnson, a visionary and wine enthusiast, purchased a small plot of land in Temecula. Johnson saw great potential in the region's Mediterranean-like climate and fertile soil, which seemed ideal for grape cultivation. Inspired by his passion for winemaking, he decided to establish a vineyard on the property and named it Ramspur Ranch.

During the early years, the focus of Ramspur Ranch was primarily on grape growing, supplying grapes to various wineries across California. However, as Johnson gained more experience and knowledge about the art of winemaking, he decided to take his venture one step further. In 1973, he made the bold move to start producing and bottling his own wines under the Ramspur Winery label.

The winery quickly gained recognition for its commitment to quality and innovation. Johnson, known for his meticulous attention to detail, applied his passion and expertise to meticulously crafting wines that reflected the essence of the Temecula Valley. This dedication to excellence led to numerous accolades and prestigious awards for Ramspur wines, solidifying its reputation as a distinguished producer.

In the early 1990s, Ramspur Winery faced a significant turning point when Johnson decided to retire. The winery underwent a transition period as it changed ownership, but the commitment to maintaining the legacy of producing outstanding wines remained at the forefront. New owners took charge of Ramspur Winery and continued nurturing the vineyard while ensuring that the winemaking tradition upheld the high standards set by Marvin Johnson.

Throughout the years, Ramspur Winery has expanded its vineyard holdings to other areas within the Temecula Valley, fostering diversity in grape varietals and allowing for greater creativity in winemaking. Today, the winery encompasses several picturesque vineyards, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines produced.

Ramspur Winery's portfolio boasts an impressive variety of wines, showcasing the region's grape diversity and the winemakers' creativity. From elegant and nuanced Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs to bold and robust Cabernet Sauvignons and Zinfandels, their wines offer something to please every palate.

Aside from its exceptional wines, Ramspur Winery also offers a warm and inviting tasting room experience. Visitors can explore the winery's rich history while enjoying stunning views of the vineyards. The knowledgeable and passionate staff guides guests through flights of their award-winning wines, offering insight into each varietal's characteristics and the winemaking processes employed.

In conclusion, Ramspur Winery's journey is a testament to both the perseverance of its founders and the vitality of the Temecula Valley wine region. With a history rooted in passion, innovation, and a commitment to quality, Ramspur Winery continues to thrive as one of the premier wineries in California, delighting wine enthusiasts with its exceptional offerings and capturing the essence of Southern California winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
