Praxis Cellars
History
Praxis Cellars is a renowned winery located in the heart of California's wine country. The winery has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several decades. It was established in 1993 by renowned winemaker Bill Arbios, who had a vision of creating exceptional wines that were not only delicious but also affordable.
Bill Arbios, a veteran winemaker with years of experience in the industry, was passionately committed to producing wines of the highest quality. He drew inspiration from his travels through Europe, where he discovered the art of winemaking and developed a deep appreciation for the craft. When he returned to California, he set out on a mission to create his own winery, one that would produce exceptional wines that reflected the terroir of the region.
Praxis Cellars took its name from the Greek word "praxis," which means the practical application of knowledge or theory. This name perfectly captured Arbios's philosophy of winemaking: the combination of his knowledge and expertise with the practical application of traditional techniques and sustainable practices.
In the early years, Praxis Cellars focused primarily on producing varietal wines from Sonoma County and other select regions in California. Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel were among the first wines that Arbios crafted, and they quickly gained recognition for their exceptional quality and affordable price point.
One of the defining characteristics of Praxis Cellars is its commitment to sustainable winemaking practices. From the very beginning, the winery embraced environmentally friendly initiatives, establishing itself as a leader in sustainable viticulture. Praxis Cellars implemented several practices to reduce its environmental impact, such as organic farming, water conservation, and the use of renewable energy sources.
Over the years, Praxis Cellars expanded its portfolio to include a diverse range of wines, each expressing the unique characteristics of the regions they come from. The winery's focus on small-lot production allowed them to maintain a hands-on approach, ensuring that each wine received the attention and care it deserved.
In 2011, Arbios passed the torch to the next generation of winemakers, Joe Healy and Jim Mott, who continued to uphold the winery's legacy. They shared Arbios's vision of creating exceptional wines that reflected the distinct characteristics of the region, while also embracing innovative techniques and winemaking practices.
Today, Praxis Cellars is celebrated for producing a wide array of award-winning wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more. The winery's commitment to excellence and sustainable practices has garnered recognition and accolades from wine enthusiasts and critics alike.
Visiting Praxis Cellars is a delightful experience, as the winery offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with its picturesque vineyards and inviting tasting room. Visitors have the opportunity to taste a variety of wines while learning about the winemaking process and the rich history of the winery.
In conclusion, Praxis Cellars stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of its founders and winemakers. From its humble beginnings in 1993 to its current status as a respected and celebrated winery, Praxis Cellars has remained true to its roots, consistently producing exceptional wines that embody the essence of California's wine country.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
