Porter Creek Vineyards History

Porter Creek Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California. Established in 1977 by George Davis, the winery has gained a reputation for producing exceptional cool-climate wines, especially Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Old Vine Zinfandel.

The story of Porter Creek Vineyards begins with George Davis, a native of Ohio, who developed a passion for winemaking while studying at UC Davis in the late 1960s. After completing his studies, he worked as a winemaker at several prominent wineries in California before deciding to pursue his dream of owning his own vineyard and winery.

In 1977, George purchased a 40-acre property in Sonoma County, which had formerly been planted with prune and Gravenstein apple orchards. He saw the potential of the land to grow high-quality grapes and set out to transform it into a vineyard. With a focus on sustainable and organic farming practices, George planted his first vines, including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Porter Creek Vineyards gained recognition for its exceptional wines, with critics praising their elegance, balance, and ability to express the unique terroir of the Russian River Valley. George Davis's commitment to natural winemaking practices, such as native yeast fermentation and minimal intervention in the cellar, also contributed to the distinctive character of the wines.

In 1997, George's son, Alex Davis, joined the family business and took over as the winemaker. Drawing inspiration from his father's philosophy and experience, Alex continued to produce wines that reflected the family's dedication to sustainable farming and crafting wines that showcase the best of the vineyard site.

Under Alex's guidance, Porter Creek Vineyards expanded its portfolio to include additional grape varieties, such as Syrah, Viognier, and Carignane. The winery also acquired more vineyard land, expanding the production to over 30 different vineyard blocks scattered across their estate, each with its own unique microclimate and soil composition.

Today, Porter Creek Vineyards remains one of the most highly regarded wineries in the Russian River Valley, known for its commitment to producing terroir-driven wines of exceptional quality. The focus on sustainable farming continues, with the use of cover crops, beneficial insects, and natural predators to maintain vineyard health and biodiversity.

Visitors to Porter Creek Vineyards can enjoy a warm and welcoming tasting room, surrounded by the picturesque vineyard and beautiful gardens. The winery organizes exclusive tastings and events, offering visitors a chance to experience the remarkable wines and immerse themselves in the rich history and winemaking tradition of the Davis family.

In conclusion, Porter Creek Vineyards stands as a testament to the Davis family's unwavering commitment to crafting exceptional cool-climate wines rooted in sustainable practices and a deep respect for the land. Their story is one of passion, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, making Porter Creek Vineyards a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking out the best of the Russian River Valley.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
