Philo Ridge Vineyards
History
Philo Ridge Vineyards was established in 2001 in the picturesque Anderson Valley of California, renowned for its cool climate and ideal conditions for vine cultivation. The story of Philo Ridge Vineyards can be traced back to the vision and passion of its founder, Jonathan Lachs.
Originally hailing from the East Coast, Lachs discovered his love for viticulture while pursuing a career in environmental law. Fascinated by the art and science of winemaking, he decided to follow his passion and create his own winery. After extensive research and exploring various potential locations, Lachs chose the Anderson Valley as the perfect terroir to grow exceptional grapes.
The vineyard's name, Philo Ridge, is derived from the small nearby town of Philo, which played a crucial role in the winery's development. The ridge itself refers to the gently sloping hills where the vineyard is situated, offering outstanding sun exposure and optimal drainage for the vines.
When Philo Ridge Vineyards was established, Lachs planted several classic Burgundian and Alsatian grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling. These varietals perfectly suited the cool climate of Anderson Valley, known for producing wines with excellent acidity, elegance, and complexity.
From the very beginning, the guiding principle behind Philo Ridge Vineyards was to craft wines that truly express the unique characteristics of their vineyard site. Every step in the winemaking process, from tending to the vines to barrel aging, is performed with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to letting the grapes' natural flavors shine through.
Over the years, Philo Ridge Vineyards has gained a reputation for producing exceptional single-vineyard wines that beautifully showcase the distinct qualities of their Anderson Valley origins. These wines have garnered critical acclaim and have been highly regarded by wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Aside from its dedication to winemaking, Philo Ridge Vineyards also prioritizes sustainability and environmental stewardship. Employing organic farming practices, the vineyard strives to minimize its impact on the land and surrounding ecosystem. These efforts not only contribute to the health and quality of the grapes but also reflect the winery's commitment to preserving the beauty and integrity of the Anderson Valley.
Visiting Philo Ridge Vineyards offers an opportunity to experience the charm and tranquility of Anderson Valley firsthand. The winery's rustic and welcoming tasting room provides a comfortable setting for guests to sample their exquisite wines and learn about the meticulous winemaking process directly from the knowledgeable staff.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
