Pear Valley
History
Pear Valley Winery is located in the Paso Robles region of California and has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several decades. Established in 1999, Pear Valley has become known for producing exceptional wines and welcoming guests to its beautiful estate.
The story of Pear Valley Winery begins with its founders, Tom and Kathleen Maas. In the early 1990s, the couple embarked on a journey to find the perfect place to grow wine grapes. They were drawn to the serene beauty and unique microclimate of Paso Robles, an up-and-coming wine region at the time. With a shared passion for wine and a desire to create something special, they purchased a picturesque 20-acre ranch in the area and set out to plant vineyards.
The Maas family carefully selected varietals that thrive in the Paso Robles climate, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Sirah, and Chardonnay. They chose to name their winery Pear Valley after the abundance of pear trees that once grew on the property, paying homage to the land's agricultural heritage.
In the early years, Tom and Kathleen focused on nurturing their vineyards, ensuring that the grapes received the optimal care and attention required to produce high-quality wines. The unique terroir of the Paso Robles region, characterized by warm days, cool nights, and diverse soil types, played a significant role in shaping the distinct flavors and aromas found in Pear Valley wines.
As the winery's reputation grew, so did the size of the property. The family expanded their vineyards to encompass 104 acres, taking advantage of the diverse microclimates within the estate to cultivate an array of grapes. This allowed them to experiment with different wine styles and truly showcase the potential of the region.
Pear Valley Winery's commitment to sustainable farming practices soon became a cornerstone of their operations. The family implemented environmentally friendly techniques, such as using cover crops, compost, and drip irrigation systems, to minimize their impact on the land. This dedication to sustainability not only contributes to the preservation of the Paso Robles ecosystem but also enhances the overall quality of the wines.
Over the years, Pear Valley Winery has gained recognition and numerous awards for their exceptional wines. Their estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petite Sirah have earned accolades for their rich flavors, elegant structure, and balanced tannins. The Chardonnay, known for its bright acidity and tropical fruit notes, has also delighted wine enthusiasts and critics alike.
In addition to producing remarkable wines, Pear Valley Winery offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors. The winery's tasting room, situated in a renovated 1920s farmhouse, provides a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Guests can savor a diverse range of wines while taking in the breathtaking views of the vineyards and rolling hills.
The hospitality of Pear Valley extends beyond tastings, as the winery offers various events throughout the year. From vineyard tours and wine pairing dinners to outdoor concerts and art exhibits, there is always something exciting happening at the estate. These events allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the winemaking process and appreciate the artistry behind each bottle.
As Pear Valley Winery looks towards the future, the Maas family remains committed to producing exceptional wines and providing memorable experiences. Their passion, dedication, and love for the land are evident in every aspect of their operation. Whether you're a wine enthusiast or simply appreciate the beauty of California's wine country, a visit to Pear Valley is sure to be an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Paso Robles winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
