Oak Mountain Winery History

Oak Mountain Winery is a renowned winery nestled in the heart of Temecula Valley, California. Founded in 1999 by the passionate and visionary owners, the Wilson family, the winery has a rich history that illustrates dedication, innovation, and a commitment to producing exceptional wines.

The story of Oak Mountain Winery begins with the patriarch of the Wilson family, Steve, who was captivated by the beauty and potential of the Temecula Valley region. Inspired by his travels, Steve envisioned creating a winery that could showcase the unique terroir and microclimate of this Southern California wine region.

With this vision in mind, Steve Wilson purchased a 10-acre vineyard property in the Temecula Valley and began planting premium grape varietals. The Wilson family painstakingly selected and cultivated the vineyards, meticulously tending to each grapevine to ensure the highest quality fruit. Over the years, the vineyards have expanded to cover more than 20 acres and include varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Syrah, and more.

In 2000, Oak Mountain Winery officially opened its doors to the public, welcoming guests to experience the beauty of the vineyards and taste their exceptional wines. From the beginning, the winery focused on producing small lots of handcrafted wines that truly reflected the unique character of the Temecula Valley.

Oak Mountain Winery quickly gained recognition for its commitment to quality and innovation. In 2004, they were one of the first wineries in the region to introduce a sparkling wine program, producing a variety of delightful sparkling wines, including Blanc de Blancs and Sparkling Sangiovese.

Another highlight in Oak Mountain Winery's history came in 2006 when they unveiled their unique and groundbreaking Cave, carved into the mountainside. This underground wine cellar and barrel room became one of the main attractions for visitors, providing a captivating setting for wine tasting and private events. The Cave also reflects the winery's commitment to sustainable practices, as its natural insulation helps maintain a consistent temperature and reduces energy consumption.

Oak Mountain Winery has consistently sought to innovate and experiment with winemaking techniques. In 2010, they introduced a line of fruit-infused wines, adding a playful twist to their portfolio. These fruit-infused wines, ranging from peach and mango to pomegranate and cranberry, have become popular crowd-pleasers, particularly during the summer months.

The winery's commitment to quality and sustainability extends beyond winemaking. Oak Mountain Winery practices environmentally friendly viticulture, implementing water conservation methods, using organic fertilizers, and embracing integrated pest management systems. Their dedication to sustainable practices has earned them certification from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

In keeping with their mission to engage and educate visitors, Oak Mountain Winery offers various wine tasting experiences, tours, and events throughout the year. Guests can embark on vineyard tours, explore the Cave, and indulge in food and wine pairings. Additionally, the winery hosts regular events like wine dinners, festivals, and live music performances that further enhance the overall experience for visitors.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
