Nottingham Cellars History

Nottingham Cellars, located in Livermore Valley, California, has an intriguing history that dates back several decades. Founded by Jeff and Diane Cranor in 2009, the winery has swiftly emerged as one of the leading producers in the region, earning acclaim for their exceptional wines that beautifully showcase the unique terroir of Livermore Valley.

Livermore Valley has a winemaking legacy that dates back to the mid-19th century when pioneer winemakers recognized its potential as a premier winegrowing region. Nottingham Cellars, true to the spirit of Livermore Valley's heritage, contributes to this legacy by crafting world-class wines with a modern touch.

Jeff Cranor, a native of Livermore Valley, grew up surrounded by vineyards and wine culture in the region. His passion for winemaking was fostered early on, leading him to pursue a formal education in enology. After completing his studies, Cranor worked at several prestigious wineries throughout California, honing his skills and expanding his knowledge of winemaking techniques.

In 2009, Cranor and his wife, Diane, decided to follow their dream of establishing their own winery in Livermore Valley. They named their venture Nottingham Cellars in tribute to their respective ancestral roots in Nottingham, England. With a vision to produce exceptional wines that showcase the unique qualities of the region, Nottingham Cellars aimed to join the ranks of the esteemed wineries already flourishing in the area.

To achieve their goal, the Cranors carefully selected prime vineyard sites within Livermore Valley. They recognized the importance of terroir in producing distinctive wines, and thus they meticulously crafted their portfolio by sourcing grapes from some of the best vineyards in the region. Nottingham Cellars focuses on small-lot, handcrafted wines, ensuring attention to detail and the expression of true varietal character.

From the very beginning, Nottingham Cellars garnered attention and acclaim for its wines. They quickly gained a reputation for producing elegant, well-balanced, and expressive Bordeaux-style reds, particularly their flagship wine, the Casa de Vinas, a Bordeaux blend. This wine, along with their other red varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, showcased the richness and complexity of Livermore Valley's diverse microclimates.

Nottingham Cellars' commitment to quality winemaking was further solidified by the hiring of winemaker Collin Cranor, Jeff's brother, in 2012. Collin brought his own expertise and passion to the winery, focusing on fine-tuning their winemaking practices and further elevating the quality of their wines. Under Collin's guidance, Nottingham Cellars continued to produce exceptional vintages, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards.

Beyond their dedication to producing outstanding wines, Nottingham Cellars also values community engagement. They actively participate in charitable events and support local organizations, fostering a sense of social responsibility and giving back to the Livermore Valley community that has embraced them.

Today, Nottingham Cellars stands as a testament to the Cranor family's vision for Livermore Valley winemaking. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
