Moondance Cellars History

Moondance Cellars is a remarkable winery nestled in the heart of California wine country. With a rich history dating back several decades, the winery has established itself as a leader in producing exceptional wines and providing an unforgettable wine-tasting experience. Let us delve into the detailed history of Moondance Cellars and explore how it has evolved over the years.

Moondance Cellars was founded in 1978 by the visionary winemaker, Michael Anderson. Inspired by the serene beauty of the California landscape and captivated by the region's burgeoning wine culture, Anderson set out to create a winery that would stand out for its commitment to excellence and innovation. Under his guidance, Moondance Cellars quickly gained recognition for its exceptional wines and unique winemaking techniques.

Initially, Moondance Cellars focused on producing small-batch, artisanal wines, primarily using grapes sourced from select vineyards across the state. Anderson believed that quality winemaking began in the vineyards, and he meticulously sourced the best fruit from different regions to craft wines of unparalleled taste and complexity.

As the winery's reputation grew, so did its vineyard holdings. In the 1980s, Moondance Cellars acquired its first vineyard property in the Sonoma Valley. This expansion allowed the winery to have more control over the grape-growing process, ensuring the highest quality fruit for their wines. With each passing year, the estate vineyards flourished, and Moondance Cellars became known for its exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Moondance Cellars continued to make strides in the wine industry. The winery's commitment to sustainable farming practices resonated with consumers, and they embraced Moondance's organic and biodynamic approach. Anderson and his team implemented innovative techniques such as dry-farming and cover cropping to minimize the winery's environmental impact and create wines with a distinct sense of terroir.

In 2012, Michael Anderson decided to pass the winemaking torch to his daughter, Sarah Anderson. Armed with a degree in enology and years of experience working alongside her father, Sarah brought a fresh perspective to Moondance Cellars. She embraced the winery's legacy while infusing her own creative vision, pushing the boundaries of winemaking even further.

Under Sarah's leadership, Moondance Cellars expanded its portfolio to include lesser-known varietals and experimented with different winemaking techniques. The winery began producing exquisite Syrah, Viognier, and Sangiovese wines, each reflecting the unique characteristics of their respective vineyards. Sarah also introduced a series of small lot, single vineyard wines, showcasing the individuality and diversity of California's wine regions.

Today, Moondance Cellars stands as a testament to the Anderson family's unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines. The winery's beautiful tasting room invites visitors to immerse themselves in the Moondance experience, offering panoramic views of the vineyards and the opportunity to sample a wide range of award-winning wines.

With its deep-rooted history, dedication to sustainability, and continued pursuit of excellence, Moondance Cellars remains an iconic California winery. As wine enthusiasts from around the world discover the magic of Moondance, the winery's legacy continues to flourish, leaving an indelible mark on the California wine landscape.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
