McGrail Vineyards and Winery
History
McGrail Vineyards and Winery, nestled in the heart of the Livermore Valley wine region in California, has a rich and fascinating history that spans over a century. The winery's story begins with James and Katherine McGrail, Irish immigrants who settled in Livermore in the late 1800s.
In 1883, James McGrail purchased 128 acres of land and established a horse and cattle ranch. The fertile soil and favorable climate of the Livermore Valley inspired him to try his hand at viticulture. He planted grape vines on a small parcel of the property, realizing the potential for winemaking in the region.
The vineyard was initially planted with a mix of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane varieties. James McGrail's dedication and passion for winemaking led to the successful production of his first vintage in 1893. The wines were well-received, inspiring him to expand the vineyard.
Over the years, the McGrail family continued to cultivate the vineyard, passing down their winemaking knowledge from one generation to the next. James' son, Jim McGrail, took over the operations and further developed the vineyard, experimenting with new grape varieties and modern winemaking techniques.
In the early 2000s, fifth-generation family member Mark McGrail decided to revive the family's winemaking legacy and take it to new heights. With the help of his wife and daughter, Mark focused on producing premium, handcrafted wines that showcased the Livermore Valley's unique terroir.
In 2005, McGrail Vineyards and Winery officially opened its doors to the public. The winery quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional Bordeaux and Rhône style wines, receiving numerous awards and accolades. Mark McGrail's commitment to sustainable farming practices and meticulous attention to detail in winemaking further enhanced the winery's reputation.
McGrail Vineyards and Winery's vineyards span across around 50 acres, mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, among other red and white varietals. The vineyard's altitude, well-drained soils, and the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean provide excellent conditions for grape cultivation.
Apart from their remarkable wines, the winery offers visitors a picturesque setting and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The tasting room and outdoor patio overlook the rolling vineyards, inviting guests to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings while savoring their wines. The winery also hosts various events throughout the year, including vineyard tours, wine club gatherings, and seasonal celebrations.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
