Martellotto Winery
History
Martellotto Winery is a family-owned boutique winery located in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley within the wine-rich region of Santa Barbara County, California. Founded by Greg Martellotto in 2005, the winery has steadily gained recognition for its exceptional wines and commitment to producing small, handcrafted lots using traditional winemaking techniques combined with modern innovation.
Greg Martellotto, the founder and owner of the winery, began his journey in the wine industry working with his Italian family in the Bronx, New York, where he learned the art of winemaking from his grandfather. This early exposure ignited his passion for winemaking and laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
In search of the ideal winegrowing region, Martellotto traveled along the California coast, exploring the diverse regions in pursuit of the finest grape sources. It wasn't until he discovered Santa Barbara County that he realized the incredible potential for producing high-quality wines. Enthralled by the unique microclimates, diverse soils, and cooling maritime influences, Martellotto knew he had found the perfect location to establish his winery.
In 2005, Greg Martellotto and his wife, Joanna, founded Martellotto Winery, with a vision to create world-class wines that showcase the distinctive character of the region. The winery stands apart for its focus on handcrafting small lot wines from sustainably farmed vineyards, ensuring quality control at every step of the winemaking process.
Martellotto Winery takes a unique approach to winemaking, combining Old World techniques with New World innovation. Greg Martellotto believes in preserving the natural integrity and unique expression of each varietal. To achieve this, the winery relies on traditional winemaking methods such as whole cluster pressing, slow fermentation, and extended maceration, allowing the grapes to fully develop their flavors and aromatics.
At the same time, Martellotto Winery embraces modern techniques and technology to enhance the winemaking process. By employing state-of-the-art sorting and grape selection systems, they ensure only the highest-quality fruit goes into the fermentation tanks. This meticulous attention to detail results in wines that are balanced, complex, and true reflections of the vineyard sources.
Martellotto Winery specializes in crafting an array of wines, including Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, as well as Rhône-style wines such as Syrah and Grenache. Their portfolio also features Italian varietals like Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, showcasing Greg Martellotto's roots and family heritage.
Over the years, Martellotto Winery has gained numerous accolades and critical acclaim for its outstanding wines. From high scores and rave reviews to top honors at prestigious wine competitions, their dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed within the industry. However, despite the recognition, the winery remains firmly committed to its mission of producing small-batch wines that embody the essence of Santa Barbara County's diverse terroir.
Today, Martellotto Winery welcomes visitors to its tasting room in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, where wine enthusiasts can not only taste the exceptional wines but also experience the warm hospitality and passion that defines the Martellotto family's approach to winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
