MacRostie Winery and Vineyards History

MacRostie Winery and Vineyards, nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California, has a rich and fascinating history spanning several decades. Established in 1987 by Steve MacRostie, the winery has garnered a reputation for crafting exceptional cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.

Steve MacRostie, a native Californian, found his passion for winemaking early on. After studying both enology and viticulture, he gained experience at various wineries across California, including at Hanzell Vineyards in Sonoma Valley, which was instrumental in shaping his winemaking philosophy.

In 1974, MacRostie set out on a life-changing trip to France's Burgundy region, where he developed a deep appreciation for the elegant and nuanced expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This trip would strongly influence his winemaking style, as he sought to create wines that could rival the Old World classics.

After gaining invaluable experience working for prestigious wineries, MacRostie was more than ready to establish his own venture. In 1987, he founded MacRostie Winery and Vineyards with the vision to produce premium, site-specific wines that celebrated the unique qualities of Sonoma County's diverse vineyards.

From the very beginning, MacRostie Winery and Vineyards focused on sourcing grapes from exceptional vineyard sites. They forged strong relationships with local growers who shared their commitment to quality and sustainability. These partnerships enabled MacRostie to access prime fruit from renowned vineyards such as Dutton Ranch, Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, and Sangiacomo Vineyard, among others.

In the early years, MacRostie became known for his exceptional Chardonnay wines. He embraced a minimalist approach in the cellar, allowing the grapes to fully express their distinctive character. Cool fermentation, judicious use of oak, and extended aging on the lees were some of the techniques employed to enhance complexity and texture in the wines. MacRostie's Chardonnays quickly gained recognition for their balance, finesse, and ability to age gracefully.

As the winery gained momentum, it expanded its focus to include Pinot Noir. Recognizing the Russian River Valley's unique climate and diverse soils, MacRostie saw the potential to produce world-class Pinot Noir. The vineyards situated in the cool, foggy reaches of the valley provided ideal growing conditions for this notoriously finicky grape variety.

MacRostie Winery and Vineyards meticulously nurtures their vineyards, employing sustainable farming practices to preserve the vitality of the land. They employ careful canopy management, hand-harvesting, and gentle handling of the grapes to ensure the highest quality in each bottle.

Over the years, MacRostie has continued to refine their winemaking techniques, always striving for excellence. Their commitment to crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following. Today, the winery offers a diverse range of wines, including small-lot releases that showcase specific vineyards and distinct vineyard blocks, captivating wine enthusiasts seeking unique expressions of California's premier cool-climate appellations.

In recent years, MacRostie Winery and Vineyards expanded their operations to include a stunning tasting room and hospitality center in the heart of Healdsburg, Sonoma County. This modern facility offers visitors the opportunity to experience their exceptional wines while enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards.

Steve MacRostie's unwavering dedication to crafting wines of exceptional quality, elegant balance, and a strong sense of place has firmly established MacRostie Winery and Vineyards as a flagship producer in California's renowned wine regions. With an unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and a passion for showcasing the best of Sonoma County, MacRostie continues to exemplify the very best of California winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
