Loma Prieta Winery
History
Loma Prieta Winery is nestled in the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains of California, where it has established itself as one of the premier wineries in the region. With a rich and fascinating history, this winery has come a long way since its founding, showcasing a commitment to exceptional winemaking and a passion for creating remarkable wines.
The story of Loma Prieta Winery begins in 1992 when Paul Kemp, a technology executive, and Neil Perrelli, an avid wine enthusiast, joined forces to fulfill their shared dream of producing world-class wines. The duo set out to find a suitable location to establish their winery and stumbled upon a picturesque property atop Loma Prieta, the highest peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The breathtaking views, cool climate, and unique terroir of the area convinced them that this was the perfect spot to build their dream winery.
The construction of the winery was a labor of love, involving countless hours of hard work and dedication. The founders, along with a small team of workers, hand-built the winery from the ground up, carefully crafting it to harmonize with the natural surroundings. Every detail, from the architectural design to the choice of materials, was meticulously considered.
After years of investment and perseverance, Loma Prieta Winery finally produced its inaugural vintage in 1997. The winemaking team, led by dedicated winemaker David Page, focused on small-lot, estate-grown wines that would reflect the distinct characteristics of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their commitment to quality and craftsmanship quickly earned them accolades and the reputation for producing outstanding wines.
However, the remarkable history of Loma Prieta Winery took an unexpected turn on October 17, 1989, when a devastating earthquake struck the region. The earthquake, which measured 6.9 on the Richter scale, caused widespread damage and destruction across the area, including the winery. The founders were devastated by the loss but were determined to rebuild and continue pursuing their winemaking passion.
With unwavering determination, Loma Prieta Winery rose from the ashes and underwent a major restoration. The founders and their team worked tirelessly to reconstruct the winery, even incorporating earthquake-resistant measures into the design. This reinvention allowed them to create a modern and state-of-the-art facility while preserving the winery's original charm.
Today, Loma Prieta Winery stands as a testament to resilience, passion, and the pursuit of excellence. The winery's commitment to sustainable practices and organic farming has garnered recognition from various organizations focused on environmental stewardship. Their commitment to the land and the community is reflected in every bottle of wine they produce.
Loma Prieta Winery remains a family-owned and operated business, with the founders' children actively involved in the winemaking process. The next generation carries on the legacy, combining traditional winemaking techniques with innovative practices to create exceptional wines that continue to receive critical acclaim.
Visiting Loma Prieta Winery is an unforgettable experience, as it offers not only exquisite wines but also breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The winery welcomes guests for tours, tastings, and special events throughout the year, providing an opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich history and winemaking traditions that make Loma Prieta Winery truly exceptional.
In conclusion, the journey of Loma Prieta Winery is a tale of passion, perseverance, and triumph over adversity. From humble beginnings to a renowned winery, it continues to captivate wine enthusiasts with its exceptional wines. As Loma Prieta Winery looks to the future, it does so with a steadfast commitment to crafting exquisite wines that embody the spirit of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
