Lava Cap Winery
History
Lava Cap Winery, located in the beautiful Sierra Foothills of California, has a rich history that dates back several decades. Established in 1981 by the Jones family, the winery stands out as one of the pioneering establishments in the region that helped shape the area's reputation for outstanding wine production.
The story of Lava Cap Winery begins with David and Jean Jones, a couple with a shared passion for winemaking. Inspired by their love for the land and a desire to create exceptional wines, they embarked on a journey to fulfill their dreams. They carefully selected a spectacular piece of property located in El Dorado County, known for its limestone-rich soils and ideal climate for grape cultivation.
The name "Lava Cap" originates from the volcanic history of the region. Centuries ago, volcanic activity shaped the land, leaving behind a unique geological composition that contributes to the winery's distinct terroir. The volcanic ash and decomposed granite soils provide excellent drainage, ideal for growing grapes with concentrated flavors.
Upon acquiring the land, the Jones family meticulously planted their first vineyards on the steep slopes of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Their dedication to quality and sustainable farming practices quickly gained recognition, attracting the attention of other local winemakers and enthusiasts.
In the early years, Lava Cap Winery primarily focused on producing Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, as their expertise grew and they became more familiar with the nuances of their land, they expanded their vineyards to include other varietals such as Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. This diversification allowed them to create a wide range of wines, each embodying the unique character and expression of the region.
Lava Cap Winery's reputation for excellence continued to grow as they consistently produced wines with exceptional balance, complexity, and elegance. Their commitment to traditional winemaking techniques, combined with modern advancements, has resulted in a portfolio of award-winning wines that have garnered praise both locally and internationally.
Over the years, Lava Cap Winery has remained a family-owned and operated business. David and Jean Jones' two sons, Brian and David Jr., joined the family venture and now play integral roles in the winemaking process. Together, they continue to honor their parents' legacy by crafting wines that showcase the true potential of the Sierra Foothills' unique terroir.
In addition to their dedication to winemaking, Lava Cap Winery has also been actively involved in the local community. They participate in various environmental initiatives, including sustainable farming practices and water conservation programs, to protect the land and preserve the region's natural beauty.
Visiting Lava Cap Winery is a truly immersive experience. The stunning vineyard views, coupled with the warm hospitality of the Jones family, make for a memorable visit. Guests can explore the vineyards, taste an array of handcrafted wines, and learn about the winemaking process firsthand.
With a history spanning over four decades, Lava Cap Winery continues to be a shining example of the passion, dedication, and innovation that define California's winemaking industry. Their commitment to producing exceptional wines, while respecting the land and community, ensures that their legacy will endure for years to come.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
