What Some Possible Concerns About Kongsgaard
?
While Kongsgaard Winery is highly regarded by many, there have been a few criticisms that some people have voiced about the winery. It's important to note that these opinions vary and may not reflect the views of everyone. Here are a few potential concerns:
1. Limited wine availability: Kongsgaard produces a relatively small quantity of wine, leading to limited availability. This often makes it challenging for individuals to obtain their desired bottles, as they may quickly sell out.
2. High price point: Kongsgaard wines are known for their quality, but they also come with a higher price tag compared to some other wineries in the region. This exclusivity can deter budget-conscious consumers from trying or purchasing their wines.
3. Limited tasting room experience: Some visitors have mentioned that the winery's tasting room experience can be underwhelming. The tastings may lack the more extensive educational components and ambiance commonly found at larger or more tourist-focused wineries.
4. Appointment-only visits: Kongsgaard requires visitors to make appointments in advance to visit their tasting room. This policy can inconvenience spontaneous or last-minute travelers who prefer drop-in tastings without prior planning.
5. Exclusive mailing list: Kongsgaard primarily sells its wines to members of its mailing list, making it difficult for newcomers or occasional buyers to access their offerings without joining the mailing list and securing an allocation.
Remember, these criticisms are subjective and may not reflect everyone's experiences or opinions. It's always recommended to research and form your own perspective before making any judgments.

History
Kongsgaard Winery is a renowned and esteemed winery located in Napa Valley, California. Known for their unwavering commitment to quality and meticulous winemaking techniques, Kongsgaard wines have gained a loyal following among wine enthusiasts and critics alike.
The history of Kongsgaard Winery begins in the early 1970s when John Kongsgaard made his way to Napa Valley from the Midwest with a profound passion for winemaking. Inspired by the world-class wines of the region, he pursued his winemaking dreams and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the Napa Valley wine industry. His determined spirit, combined with his deep appreciation for natural winemaking methods, set the foundation for what would become Kongsgaard Winery.
In 1995, Alex Kongsgaard, John’s son, joined his father in their winemaking endeavor. Having grown up in the vineyards and cellars alongside his father, Alex possessed an innate understanding of the craft and a keen eye for detail. Together, they refined their winemaking techniques, blending traditional methods with innovative approaches to create wines of incredible depth and complexity.
Kongsgaard Winery is particularly famous for their Chardonnay, which has garnered immense acclaim for its distinct style. The Kongsgaards believe in expressing the true character of the vineyard, allowing the grapes to speak for themselves. They employ organic and biodynamic practices, cultivating their own vineyards in the cool and rugged regions of Napa Valley's eastern hills, including the Old Wente vineyard in Carneros and the Judge vineyard in Atlas Peak.
Harvesting only when the grapes have reached optimal ripeness, the Kongsgaards take a minimalistic approach to winemaking, ensuring that the resulting wines are a true reflection of the vineyard's unique characteristics. They carefully hand-sort the grapes, gently press the juice, and use only native yeasts for fermentation. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, allowing for a gradual integration of flavors and a harmonious marriage between fruit, mineral expression, and acidity.
The rise of Kongsgaard Winery to prominence is also attributed to their emphasis on small-production and minimal intervention winemaking. By limiting their yields and meticulously handcrafting their wines with utmost precision, the Kongsgaards have consistently produced wines of exceptional quality and consistency.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
