Kenneth Volk Vineyards
History
Kenneth Volk Vineyards, located in the heart of California's Central Coast wine region, has a rich and captivating history that highlights the passion and dedication of its founder, Kenneth Volk, along with his significant contributions to the winemaking industry.
The story begins in 1978 when Kenneth Volk established Wild Coyote Winery. He quickly gained recognition for his unique approach to winemaking, aiming to produce high-quality wines that truly showcased the character of the Central Coast terroir. However, in 1983, he decided to sell Wild Coyote Winery to dedicate his efforts to Adelaida Cellars, where he further honed his skills and solidified his expertise.
After nearly two decades of learning, experimenting, and pioneering winemaking techniques at Adelaida Cellars, Kenneth Volk decided to embark on a new venture. In 2004, he founded Kenneth Volk Vineyards, his eponymous winery in the picturesque Santa Maria Valley.
The establishment of Kenneth Volk Vineyards marked a turning point in his winemaking career. Inspired by the vast potential of the Central Coast region, Volk aimed to produce wines that reflected the distinctive qualities of each vineyard and grape variety. He passionately explored lesser-known and underappreciated grape varietals, seeking to showcase their potential and reintroduce them to the wine-drinking world.
Volk's winemaking philosophy revolved around meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the true expression of the grapes to shine through. He actively sought out unique vineyard sites, working closely with growers from various appellations, including Santa Maria Valley, Paso Robles, Santa Ynez Valley, and others.
One of the hallmark grape varieties that Kenneth Volk Vineyards became renowned for was Pinot Noir. Volk's extensive knowledge of the grape and unwavering commitment to quality allowed him to craft exceptional Pinot Noir wines that captured the elegance, complexity, and finesse of this delicate varietal. These efforts earned him numerous accolades and established Kenneth Volk Vineyards as a trusted producer of world-class Pinot Noir.
In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery also produced an impressive range of other varietals, some of which were often overlooked or forgotten. This included Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, and Tempranillo, to name just a few. Each wine displayed the unmistakable mark of Kenneth Volk's expertise, meticulous craftsmanship, and unwavering dedication.
Beyond his contributions to winemaking, Volk played an instrumental role in the viticultural community. He actively supported research and development initiatives, cooperated with new and aspiring winemakers, and shared his knowledge through seminars, lectures, and mentoring programs. His commitment to the industry was further solidified through his involvement in various professional organizations, including the American Society of Enology and Viticulture, the California Association of Winegrape Growers, and the Central Coast Vineyard Team.
Unfortunately, in 2018, Kenneth Volk Vineyards ended its commercial operations after Volk made the decision to retire from winemaking. While this marked the end of an era for the winery, the legacy and impact of its founder continue to resonate throughout the Central Coast wine community.
Today, Kenneth Volk's pioneering spirit and unwavering pursuit of excellence can still be felt in every corner of the California wine industry. The winery's history serves as a testament to his visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to quality, and passion for showcasing the diversity of the Central Coast's terroir.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
