Justin Vineyards & Winery History

Justin Vineyards & Winery is a renowned and highly regarded winery located in the beautiful region of Paso Robles, California. Established in 1981, the winery has gained a stellar reputation for producing exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir and microclimate of the area.

The story of Justin Vineyards began with a remarkable man named Justin Baldwin, whose passion for wine and deep-rooted commitment to crafting world-class Bordeaux-style wines drove him to establish his own winery. Baldwin, a former investment banker, left the corporate world behind, seeking a life closer to nature and his lifelong fascination with wine.

In a quest to find the perfect vineyard location, Baldwin explored a variety of regions within California before coming across Paso Robles. Drawn by the region's diverse soils and ideal climate, he recognized the potential for creating outstanding wines similar to those found in Bordeaux, France.

The winery's flagship vineyard, today known as the Justin Estate Vineyard, was acquired by Baldwin in 1981. The property's limestone-rich soils, coupled with the maritime influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean, offered an exceptional environment for cultivating Bordeaux grape varieties. Baldwin planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc vines, carefully selected to thrive in the unique terroir of Paso Robles.

From the start, Justin Vineyards focused on sustainable and organic farming practices, recognizing the importance of preserving the environment for future generations. The estate's vineyards are meticulously tended by a team dedicated to nurturing each vine to its fullest potential, ensuring that only the highest-quality fruit finds its way into the winery.

The winemaking philosophy at Justin Vineyards is rooted in the belief that wine is an expression of the land from which it originates. Guided by this philosophy, the winery meticulously crafts each wine with great care and attention to detail. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, allowing only the best fruit to undergo fermentation. French oak barrels are then used for aging, adding complexity and depth to the wines.

Justin Vineyards gained significant recognition and success with their debut vintage in 1987, which showcased the exceptional quality and elegance of their wines. The winery's iconic Isosceles blend, named after the triangular shape of the estate vineyard, quickly became a flagship wine, consistently garnering acclaim and awards from critics and consumers alike. This Bordeaux-style blend, primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, continues to be a testament to the winery's commitment to excellence and innovation.

Over the years, Justin Vineyards expanded its vineyard holdings and diversified its portfolio, crafting a range of varietal wines that reflect the diversity of Paso Robles. The winery has also embraced emerging winemaking techniques, integrating modern technology with traditional practices to further enhance wine quality and consistency.

In 2010, Justin Vineyards was acquired by the renowned luxury wine company, The Wonderful Company. Under their ownership, the winery has continued to flourish, maintaining its dedication to producing exceptional wines while preserving the heritage and legacy that Baldwin established.

Today, Justin Vineyards & Winery stands as a testament to the vision and determination of Justin Baldwin, who believed in the potential of Paso Robles to produce world-class wines. With an unwavering focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation, the winery continues to be a leading force in California winemaking, capturing the essence of the region's terroir in each glass.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
