Joullian Vineyards, located in the picturesque Carmel Valley in California, has a rich and captivating history that dates back several decades. Named after its founder, Pierre Joullian, this winery has emerged as one of the most distinguished and renowned producers of premium wines in the region.

The story begins in the early 1980s when Pierre Joullian, a successful entrepreneur and wine enthusiast, set out on a quest to establish a vineyard and winery that would embody his passion for crafting exceptional wines. After an extensive search across California, Joullian stumbled upon an idyllic piece of land in Carmel Valley, characterized by its diverse microclimates, well-drained soils, and favorable elevation.

Joullian recognized the immense potential of this untapped region and wasted no time in acquiring the property, with a vision to produce wines that would rival the best in California. Starting from scratch, he meticulously planned and executed a comprehensive vineyard estate that would embrace sustainable farming practices, preserve the natural beauty of the land, and ensure the highest quality grapes.

The first vines were planted in 1982, covering a modest area of approximately 60 acres. Drawing inspiration from the terroir-driven winemaking traditions of Burgundy, France, Joullian focused on cultivating classic varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that would fully express the unique characteristics of the California Central Coast. The winery's commitment to excellence quickly gained recognition, and Joullian wines began to garner accolades and critical acclaim.

Over the years, Joullian Vineyards expanded both in size and scope, cultivating additional varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel, resulting in a diverse portfolio of wines. Every vineyard block was meticulously designed based on soil composition, sun exposure, and drainage patterns, ensuring optimal grape development and flavor concentration.

Significant investments were made in state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, blending modern technology with traditional techniques to preserve the integrity of the grapes and capture their essence. The winery's skilled team of winemakers, led by the talented Ridge Watson, continue to push the boundaries of winemaking, constantly striving for excellence and innovation.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
