Jones Family Vineyards
History
Jones Family Vineyards is a renowned winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. The winery's rich history dates back to the early 1970s when it was founded by Tom Jones, a passionate and visionary wine enthusiast. What started as a small-scale project planted on just a few acres quickly transformed into a world-class winery known for producing exceptional wines.
Tom Jones, along with his wife, Mary, found their calling in the world of winemaking after a trip to the famous wine regions of Europe. Inspired by the Old World winemaking techniques, they returned to California with a determination to create wines that would showcase the unique terroir of Napa Valley.
In 1976, with unwavering enthusiasm and a commitment to quality, Tom and Mary purchased a picturesque piece of land in the renowned Diamond Mountain District AVA. This region, known for its volcanic soils, steep slopes, and long growing season, proved to be the perfect location for their vineyards.
With meticulous planning and planting, Tom and Mary carefully selected and cultivated various grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. They believed in practicing sustainable farming methods, respecting the land, and nurturing healthy vineyards.
Jones Family Vineyards quickly gained a reputation for producing outstanding Bordeaux-style red wines. Their commitment to quality was further recognized when the 1984 vintage of Jones Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon received high acclaim, earning them a spot among the top-tier wineries of the region.
Over the years, the winery has expanded, but it has always remained in the hands of the Jones family. Today, their son, Mark Jones, serves as the managing partner, ensuring that the family's legacy and winemaking philosophy continue to thrive.
Despite its growth, Jones Family Vineyards has always maintained a boutique approach to winemaking. The winery's small production allows for meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that each wine reflects the unique essence of the vineyard and its distinctive terroir.
Jones Family Vineyards' reputation for excellence extends beyond the borders of Napa Valley. Their wines consistently receive high ratings and accolades from critics, wine enthusiasts, and collectors alike. The dedication to quality and craftsmanship is evident in every bottle they produce, making their wines highly sought-after and coveted by connoisseurs around the world.
Beyond their flagship wines, Jones Family Vineyards also produces limited quantities of exceptional single-vineyard offerings, showcasing the diversity and complexity of Napa Valley's microclimates.
Visiting the winery is a truly unforgettable experience. Nestled among rolling hills and scenic beauty, the estate offers breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards. Guests can indulge in intimate tastings, explore the winemaking facilities, and gain insight into the winery's history and winemaking techniques.
Jones Family Vineyards represents the epitome of passion, tradition, and craftsmanship in the California wine industry. With each vintage, their story continues to evolve, and their wines continue to captivate wine enthusiasts worldwide.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
