Joel Gott Wines History

Joel Gott Wines, located in St. Helena, Napa Valley, California, has a fascinating history that spans over two decades. The winery was founded by Joel Gott and his wife, Sarah, in 1996, with a vision to craft high-quality wines that encapsulate the unique character of California's diverse wine regions.

Joel Gott's journey into winemaking began at a young age, growing up in a family that owned and operated the Montevina Winery in Amador County, California. Joel's passion for wine was further nurtured during summer vacations in the vineyards of Bordeaux, France. These experiences instilled in him an appreciation for the art of winemaking, the significance of terroir, and a desire to create exceptional wines.

In the early years of Joel Gott Wines, the focus was on producing Zinfandels from California's finest vineyards. The winery quickly gained acclaim for its approachable, fruit-forward, and well-balanced wines that showcased the true expression of the grape varietal. Joel sought out grapes grown in established regions like Lodi, Dry Creek Valley, and Amador County, selecting vineyards that exhibited the ideal climate and soil conditions for each grape variety.

However, Joel Gott Wines didn't stop at Zinfandel. The winery continuously evolved and expanded its portfolio over the years. Joel and Sarah experimented with different grape varieties and vineyard sources, exploring the intricacies of California's diverse wine regions. They sourced grapes for varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir, among others, from vineyards located along the coast, in the Central Valley, and even as far north as Oregon.

Under Joel's seasoned winemaking expertise, the winery established a reputation for blending multiple varietals from different vineyard sources to create complex, yet approachable wines. Joel's talent for blending led to the creation of iconic wines like "815" Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of grapes from different vineyards throughout California, and "Alakai" Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from premium vineyards in Napa Valley and the Central Coast.

In 2010, Joel and Sarah partnered with Trinchero Family Estates, a renowned family-owned winery with a long history in Napa Valley. This partnership provided Joel Gott Wines with additional resources, expertise, and access to high-quality vineyards, ensuring the winery's continued growth and success.

Today, Joel Gott Wines remains committed to its founding principles – crafting exceptional wines that reflect their varietal character and showcase the diverse regions of California. The winery's dedication to quality can be seen in their sustainability practices, vineyard partnerships, and meticulous winemaking techniques.

Joel Gott's legacy as a pioneer in California winemaking is exemplified by the loyal following and critical acclaim that Joel Gott Wines has garnered. Their wines have consistently received accolades for their outstanding quality, value, and expression of California's unique viticultural landscape.

Whether it's a well-balanced Zinfandel, an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, or a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc, Joel Gott Wines continues to captivate wine enthusiasts with their diverse portfolio of wines, showcasing the very best that California has to offer.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
