Hall Wines History

Hall Wines is a family-owned winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. Founded in 2002 by Kathryn Walt Hall and her late husband Craig Hall, the winery has quickly gained recognition and acclaim for producing exceptional, high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region.

The Hall family's history in winemaking can be traced back to the 1800s when Kathryn's ancestors, the Bergfeld family, started a grape-growing and winemaking legacy in the Rhine region of Germany. After immigrating to the United States, Kathryn's great-grandfather, Maximilian Hall, continued this tradition by acquiring vineyards and establishing a winery in California's Sacramento Delta.

Fast forward to the early 2000s, Kathryn and Craig Hall purchased the historic Bergfeld winery and vineyard in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Inspired by the rich winemaking heritage of their family, they set out to create a winery that would produce wines of exceptional quality, reflecting the unique terroir of Napa Valley.

The Halls recognized the potential of the land they acquired and enlisted the expertise of renowned vineyard manager David Abreu and critically acclaimed winemaker Steve Leveque to bring their vision to life. They diligently renovated and modernized the winery, establishing state-of-the-art facilities and adopting sustainable and organic farming practices.

Hall Wines focuses on crafting limited-production wines from meticulously selected grapes grown in their own world-class vineyards as well as partnering with distinguished growers throughout Napa Valley. Their vineyards span over 500 acres in prime AVA (American Viticultural Area) locations, including the acclaimed Rutherford, St. Helena, and Diamond Mountain Districts.

The winery is known for its devotion to the two primary red grape varieties of Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The team at Hall Wines embraces traditional winemaking techniques while also incorporating modern innovations to achieve wines that are both elegant and expressive. Each vineyard block is treated as an individual entity, allowing for precision and careful attention to detail in crafting the finest wines possible.

Recognition and praise quickly followed, with Hall Wines consistently being rated highly by esteemed wine critics and publications worldwide. They have received numerous accolades, including being named a "California First Growth" by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and earning multiple 100-point scores for their Cabernet Sauvignons.

Beyond their commitment to crafting exceptional wines, Hall Wines has also made significant contributions to the local community and environmental conservation efforts. They have established the Hall St. Helena Scholarship, providing scholarships to local students pursuing degrees in viticulture and enology. The winery is also certified as a California Certified Organic Farmer (CCOF) and participates in various sustainability programs to reduce their environmental impact.

Today, under the leadership of Kathryn Walt Hall and her family, Hall Wines continues to thrive and expand its reach while remaining true to its founding principles of producing world-class wines that exemplify the unique characteristics of Napa Valley. Their commitment to excellence, sustainability, and community involvement firmly positions them as one of California's premier wineries.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
