Grey Fox Vineyards
History
Grey Fox Vineyards is a breathtaking winery nestled in the heart of Northern California's picturesque Sierra Foothills wine region. Established in 1989 by proprietors, Gordon and Christine Grajek, the winery has a rich history spanning over three decades.
Gordon and Christine's passion for winemaking ignited during a trip to Europe in the early 1980s. Inspired by the Old World wineries and the art of viticulture, they decided to embark on their own winemaking journey. After months of extensive research, they discovered the perfect piece of land in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains; thus, Grey Fox Vineyards was born.
The winery derives its name from the foxes that roam the property, with the grey fox being a notable inhabitant. This innate connection to nature can be felt throughout the winery's history, as Grey Fox Vineyards has always prioritized sustainable farming practices and embraced organic viticulture long before it became a popular trend.
In the early years of Grey Fox Vineyards, Gordon and Christine faced numerous challenges but managed to overcome them with unwavering determination. They planted their first vineyard in 1991, starting with classic Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Over time, they expanded their vineyards to include other varietals such as Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Syrah.
One defining moment for Grey Fox Vineyards was the decision to focus on sparkling wines. In 1994, they planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specifically for making méthode champenoise-style sparkling wines – a bold move in an area known for producing exceptional still wines. This choice paid off handsomely, as Grey Fox Vineyards quickly gained recognition for their exceptional sparkling wines, which stood out among their peers.
Throughout the years, Grey Fox Vineyards has garnered numerous accolades for their wines. Critics have described their sparkling wines as elegant, with fine bubbles and complex flavors that rival those of Champagne in France. In addition to sparkling wines, their still wines showcase the uniqueness of the region, with each varietal reflecting the characteristics of the microclimate and terroir in which they are grown.
Grey Fox Vineyards has always been a family affair, with Gordon and Christine instilling their passion for winemaking in their children. Their son, Joshua, joined the team after completing his winemaking studies, expanding upon the family legacy and ensuring the winery's sustainable practices continue well into the future.
Looking ahead, Grey Fox Vineyards seeks to continue producing top-quality wines that epitomize the essence of the Sierra Foothills. With their commitment to sustainable farming, attention to detail in the winemaking process, and continuous innovation, Grey Fox Vineyards is poised to remain a beloved destination for wine enthusiasts seeking a taste of California's rich winemaking heritage.
When you visit Grey Fox Vineyards, you are not just experiencing exceptional wines – you are immersing yourself in a decades-long story of passion, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the art of winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
