What Some Possible Concerns About Freeman Vineyard & Winery
?
While opinions may vary, here are a couple of potential concerns or criticisms that some people have expressed about Freeman Vineyard & Winery:
1. Limited Availability: Freeman Vineyard & Winery is known for producing smaller quantities of wine compared to larger wineries. As a result, their wines can be harder to find in stores or restaurants outside of their tasting room or wine club. For some customers, this limited availability may be frustrating, especially if they enjoy the wines and want to purchase them more regularly.
2. Higher Prices: Freeman Vineyard & Winery is generally considered a premium winery, and their wines tend to come with higher price tags. While many customers are willing to pay premium prices for their high-quality wines, some have voiced concerns about the value for the money and believe they could find similar quality wines at a lower price point elsewhere.
3. Limited Varieties: While Freeman Vineyard & Winery is known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, their wine portfolio is relatively narrow. This limited variety, although focusing on quality over quantity, may not appeal to those who prefer a wider range of wine options or different grape varietals.
4. Exclusive Membership: Freeman Vineyard & Winery offers a wine club membership for avid followers and collectors. However, some individuals find the exclusivity of the membership and occasional limited access to certain wines off-putting. The story of Freeman Vineyard & Winery begins with Ken and Akiko Freeman, the visionaries behind this esteemed winery. Ken, a San Francisco-based anesthesiologist, and Akiko, a Tokyo-born journalist, had a shared passion for wine and the desire to craft world-class wines that express the unique terroir of the Russian River Valley.
In 2001, the Freemans acquired a 40-acre property on the infamous Westside Road. This site, officially named Freeman Ranch, proved to be ideal for their winemaking aspirations. With its diverse soils, gentle slopes, and a maritime-influenced climate that allows for slow and even ripening of grapes, Freeman Ranch offered the perfect conditions for producing top-quality wines.
The Freemans engaged renowned viticulturist, Jim Pratt, to plant the vineyard with a focus on Burgundian varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which thrive in the cool coastal climate of the region. Careful attention was paid to selecting specific clones and rootstocks, ensuring the vineyard's ability to produce exceptional fruit.
At the heart of Freeman Vineyard & Winery's winemaking philosophy is a dedication to showcasing the unique characteristics of each vineyard block and vintage. The Freemans took a hands-on approach, meticulously farming each block to maximize the expression of the terroir.
The winery's first vintage was released in 2002, garnering critical acclaim and immediate recognition for its elegant style, finesse, and age-worthy wines. Freeman Vineyard & Winery gained a reputation for its exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals, crafted with a balance of Old World sophistication and New World vibrancy.
Over the years, Freeman Vineyard & Winery expanded its portfolio with additional vineyard sources from select sites in the Sonoma Coast and Mendocino Ridge appellations. This enabled them to broaden their offerings while maintaining their commitment to producing wines of utmost quality and distinction.
Today, Freeman Vineyard & Winery continues to be a family-run operation. Together, Ken, Akiko, and their son, Akio, oversee all aspects of the winemaking process. In the pursuit of excellence, they employ traditional winemaking techniques, including hand sorting, native yeast fermentation, minimal intervention, and aging in French oak barrels.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
