This family-owned estate is located in the heart of Sonoma County's Russian River Valley, renowned for its exceptional winemaking traditions and stunning vineyard landscapes.

The story of Foppiano Vineyards begins in 1896 when Italian immigrant Giovanni Foppiano purchased 160 acres of land and planted his first grapevines. Drawing from his Italian heritage, Giovanni focused on crafting high-quality, handcrafted wines, primarily from the noble grape varieties of the Old World.

Through generations of dedication and unwavering passion for winemaking, Foppiano Vineyards flourished despite the challenges presented by Prohibition in the 1920s. During this era, the family navigated the restrictions by legally selling sacramental wines to the church and maintaining their vineyards. They even managed to secretly produce small batches of wine for select loyal customers who appreciated their exceptional craftsmanship.

After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Foppiano Vineyards experienced a period of rapid growth. The family diligently expanded their vineyard holdings, adopting modern and innovative winemaking techniques, while still upholding their commitment to producing elegant, terroir-driven wines.

In the 1950s, Louis M. Foppiano, the third-generation family member, took the helm of the winery. He propelled Foppiano Vineyards to prominence by introducing popular varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Louis also played a pivotal role in establishing the winery's reputation for crafting exceptional Petite Sirah wines, which have become their flagship varietal today.

With the arrival of the fourth-generation winemaker, James Foppiano, in the early 1980s, Foppiano Vineyards continued to evolve and innovate. James embraced sustainable viticulture practices, demonstrating the family's commitment to preserving the natural environment and ensuring the long-term health of their vineyards.

Today, Foppiano Vineyards is led by the fifth-generation family members, and the winery continues to thrive and uphold its distinguished legacy. They maintain a balance between tradition and innovation, capturing the essence of the Russian River Valley's unique terroir in each bottle.

Foppiano Vineyards takes great pride in their accolades and achievements. They have received countless awards and recognition for their wines, showcasing their dedication to consistently producing exceptional vintages. Their commitment to excellence extends beyond winemaking, as they also remain actively involved in community outreach programs and sustainable farming practices.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
