Far Niente Winery History

Far Niente Winery is a historic and renowned California winery located in the heart of Napa Valley. Its story dates back to the late 19th century, making it one of the oldest wineries in the region.

The tale of Far Niente Winery begins in 1885, when a visionary entrepreneur named John Benson purchased a 40-acre plot of land in Oakville, California. Recognizing the potential of the region for growing high-quality grapes, Benson planted vines and established what would become Far Niente vineyards. The name "Far Niente" was chosen to signify the concept of "sweet nothing" or idleness, which aptly represented the relaxed and leisurely lifestyle associated with Napa Valley.

In the early years, Far Niente thrived as a successful winery, producing high-quality wines that gained recognition and acclaim. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen challenges, the winery was forced to close its doors during the Prohibition era. For over 60 years, Far Niente lay dormant, with its vineyards left untended and winemaking operations ceased.

However, in 1979, Gil Nickel, a successful Oklahoma businessman, discovered the abandoned winery and its potential. captivated by its rich history and charm, Nickel saw an opportunity to revive the winemaking tradition of Far Niente. He purchased the estate and embarked on an ambitious journey to restore the winery to its former glory.

Revitalizing Far Niente Winery proved to be a labor of love for Nickel and his team. They carefully restored the historic buildings, including the iconic stone-shell wine caves, which were hand-dug by Chinese immigrant laborers in the late 19th century. The restoration process preserved the winery's architectural heritage while incorporating modern winemaking techniques and technologies.

Once the physical renovations were complete, Far Niente began its pursuit of producing exceptional wines once again. Nickel assembled a team of talented winemakers, including the legendary André Tchelistcheff, to ensure that each bottle of Far Niente wine would be a testament to the estate's legacy and the region's winemaking potential.

Far Niente Winery specializes in producing estate-bottled, premium wines, focusing primarily on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery's vineyards benefit from the ideal microclimate and unique terroir of Napa Valley, resulting in grapes of outstanding quality. The winemaking process at Far Niente combines traditional methods, such as hand-harvesting and aging in oak barrels, with modern techniques to craft wines that showcase the true essence of Napa Valley.

Over the years, Far Niente's dedication to excellence has been acknowledged through numerous accolades and awards. Its wines are highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors alike, both in the United States and internationally.

Today, Far Niente Winery continues to be family-owned and operated, embracing its rich history while looking towards the future. The estate remains a picturesque destination where visitors can experience the winery's storied past, explore its stunning vineyards, and enjoy the fruits of its labor through wine tastings and tours.

Far Niente Winery serves as a testament to the resilience and passion of those who have endeavored to preserve and advance the art of winemaking in California's esteemed Napa Valley. Its storied past and commitment to excellence have firmly established it as a leading figure in the world of Californian wines.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
