Estancia Estates Winery
History
Estancia Estates Winery, nestled in the rolling hills of Monterey County, California, is one of the most renowned wineries in the region. Its rich history dates back to the 1960s, when it was first established by founder and visionary winemaker, Augustin Huneeus Sr.
In 1962, Augustin Sr., a native of Chile who had a passion for viticulture, stumbled upon an extraordinary piece of land in California's Central Coast. Recognizing its potential for grape cultivation, he decided to pursue his dream of crafting exceptional wines. Augustin Sr.'s vision was to create wines that reflected the unique terroir of the region, combining Old World winemaking traditions with New World techniques.
With unwavering determination, Augustin Sr. planted his first vineyards at Estancia Estates in 1966, focusing primarily on the classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. He also introduced Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and other varietals to diversify the portfolio. The climate and geography of Monterey County provided a perfect microclimate for grape-growing, with cool maritime breezes and abundant sunshine, allowing for slow and even ripening of the fruit.
From the very beginning, Estancia Estates Winery distinguished itself by practicing sustainable farming methods. Augustin Sr. believed in the importance of preserving the land for future generations, implementing techniques that protected the environment and promoted biodiversity. These sustainable farming practices enhanced the quality of the grapes and ultimately resulted in wines of exceptional character and complexity.
Over the years, Estancia Estates Winery gained recognition for its commitment to crafting premium wines. The winery's meticulous attention to detail, from vineyard management to winemaking techniques, ensured that each bottle was of the highest quality. As a result, Estancia Estates wines consistently garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, solidifying its reputation as a top-tier winery.
In 1999, Estancia Estates Winery became part of Constellation Brands, a leading international wine and spirits company. This partnership allowed the winery to access additional resources and expand its production capabilities while maintaining its commitment to producing outstanding wines.
Today, under the guidance of winemaker Ian White, Estancia Estates Winery continues to thrive and innovate. The winery's portfolio has expanded to include a wide range of varietals, each expressing the unique characteristics of Monterey County. From the exquisite single-vineyard Pinot Noirs to the bold and structured Cabernet Sauvignons, Estancia Estates wines exemplify the richness and diversity of California winemaking.
Moreover, Estancia Estates Winery remains dedicated to sustainable practices, ensuring the health and longevity of the land for generations to come. By minimizing the use of chemicals, promoting biodiversity, and conserving water, the winery remains a steward of the environment, striving to maintain balance and harmony between nature and winemaking.
In conclusion, Estancia Estates Winery's extraordinary history is a testament to the vision, passion, and commitment of its founder, Augustin Huneeus Sr. From humble beginnings to becoming one of the most respected wineries in California, Estancia Estates Winery continues to produce exceptional wines, rooted in tradition yet influenced by the spirit of innovation. With its sustainable practices and dedication to quality, Estancia Estates Winery stands as a shining example of California winemaking at its finest.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
