Ecluse Wines
History
Ecluse Wines is a boutique winery located in Paso Robles, California. Founded in 2001 by Steve and Pam Lock, the winery has garnered a reputation for producing exceptional handcrafted wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.
The story of Ecluse Wines begins with Steve Lock's passion for winemaking. Growing up in a family that appreciated fine wine, Lock was exposed to the art of winemaking at a young age. His fascination for wine only grew stronger over the years, leading him to embark on a journey to establish his own winery.
In 1997, Steve and Pam Lock purchased a stunning 30-acre property in the Paso Robles appellation. Situated on a picturesque hillside, the location provided optimal conditions for grape growing, with its varying microclimates, well-drained soils, and ample sunshine. Recognizing the potential of this land, the Locks began planting vineyards, primarily focusing on Rhône and Bordeaux varietals.
After several years of meticulous vineyard management and learning from local winemakers, Steve Lock decided to take the plunge and launch his own label. In 2001, Ecluse Wines was officially established. The name "Ecluse" comes from the French word meaning "lock" or "sluice gate," serving as a tribute to Steve's family heritage in France and his affinity for Rhône-style wines.
From the very beginning, Ecluse Wines prioritized quality over quantity. The winery's philosophy revolves around handcrafting limited production wines that convey a sense of place. Grapes are carefully handpicked and sorted to ensure only the best fruit makes its way into the winery. Steve Lock personally oversees every step of the winemaking process, employing a combination of traditional and innovative techniques to create wines with depth, complexity, and balance.
Ecluse Wines quickly gained recognition for its exceptional red blends, particularly their Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons. The Locks believe that Paso Robles provides a perfect backdrop for these varietals, allowing them to achieve full phenolic ripeness while maintaining a sense of freshness and elegance.
Over the years, Ecluse Wines has received numerous accolades and awards, solidifying its reputation as a producer of top-quality wines. The winery's focus on craftsmanship, attention to detail, and commitment to sustainable practices have contributed to its success.
Today, Ecluse Wines remains a family-owned and operated business with Steve and Pam Lock at the helm, supported by their daughter, Kelly, who plays an active role in marketing and brand development. The winery continues to push the boundaries of winemaking, constantly seeking new vineyard sites and experimenting with different varietals and blends.
Visitors to Ecluse Wines are greeted with warm hospitality and a charming tasting room overlooking the estate vineyards. The winery also hosts various events throughout the year, showcasing their wines and sharing their passion for winemaking with enthusiasts.
In conclusion, Ecluse Wines stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of the Lock family. Their unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines that truly reflect the soul of Paso Robles has elevated the winery to become one of the region's most respected and sought-after producers. With each bottle of Ecluse wine, wine lovers can experience the passion, artistry, and unwavering love for winemaking that has characterized the journey of this remarkable winery.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
