Dutton Estate Winery History

Dutton Estate Winery is a family-owned and operated winery located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. It was founded by Joe and Tracy Dutton, who come from a long line of farmers and grape growers. The Dutton family has been farming in Sonoma County for over five generations, and their commitment to quality and sustainable farming practices has been the backbone of the winery's success.

The Dutton family's journey in the wine industry began in 1967 when Joe's parents, Warren and Gail Dutton, made the decision to move from San Bernardino to the Russian River Valley and purchase a piece of land where they could grow grapes. This was the birth of Dutton Ranch, the original vineyard that would later become the foundation for Dutton Estate Winery.

Joe Dutton grew up working alongside his parents in the vineyards, learning the ins and outs of grape growing and the art of winemaking. His passion for the land and the vines was deeply rooted, and after earning a degree in Viticulture from Fresno State University, he returned to his family's ranch to continue the tradition.

In 1995, Joe and Tracy decided to take their family's grape-growing legacy to the next level by establishing their own winery, Dutton Estate. They sought to showcase the exceptional quality of their vineyards by producing small-lot, estate-grown wines that reflected the unique terroir of the Russian River Valley.

Dutton Estate Winery focuses on cool-climate varietals, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which thrive in the coastal fog and maritime influences of the region. They also cultivate other grape varieties such as Syrah, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc. Each vineyard block is meticulously managed and sustainably farmed, with a thoughtful balance of agriculture and preservation of the land.

Over the years, Dutton Estate Winery has gained recognition and acclaim for its outstanding wines. Their commitment to quality has garnered them numerous accolades and high scores from respected wine critics. They have become known for making elegant and expressive wines that capture the essence of the Russian River Valley.

The Dutton family's dedication to sustainability extends beyond the vineyards. They have implemented eco-friendly practices throughout their winemaking process, including solar energy, recycled water, and owl houses for natural pest control.

Dutton Estate Winery has also opened its doors to visitors, offering a warm and inviting tasting room experience. Guests can enjoy a scenic view of the vineyards while sampling their handcrafted wines, often served by family members themselves. Additionally, they offer vineyard tours and private events, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the Dutton family's winemaking journey.

Today, Dutton Estate Winery continues to be a labor of love for the entire Dutton family. Joe and Tracy work closely with their children, along with a dedicated team of professionals, to carry on the family's legacy and produce exceptional wines that reflect the beauty and character of the Russian River Valley.

In summary, Dutton Estate Winery stands as a testament to the Dutton family's deep-rooted connection to the land and their unwavering commitment to crafting exceptional wines. Their rich history, passion for sustainable farming, and dedication to quality have made them one of the most respected and sought-after wineries in the Russian River Valley.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
