Dono dal Cielo History

Dono dal Cielo is a charming boutique winery nestled in the foothills of the spectacular Sierra Nevada Mountains in Camino, California. Known for its stunning views, exceptional wines, and warm hospitality, Dono dal Cielo has become a beloved destination for wine enthusiasts seeking a unique and memorable experience.

Founded in 1998 by Randy and Tina Rossi, Dono dal Cielo, which means "Gift from Heaven" in Italian, was born out of a shared passion for winemaking and the desire to create handcrafted wines of exceptional quality. Randy and Tina moved to the region with the hope of becoming part of the thriving wine culture in California and realizing their dream of owning a vineyard.

The journey to establish Dono dal Cielo was not without its challenges. Randy and Tina were initially greeted with skepticism by local winegrowers who believed the region to be unsuitable for grape cultivation due to its high elevation and unique climate. However, undeterred by the naysayers, they persevered and set out to prove that their vision was indeed possible.

The couple carefully selected the finest Rhône and Bordeaux varietals suited for the climate and soil composition of their estate. The vineyard, which spans over 25 acres, is situated at an elevation ranging from 3,000 to 3,400 feet, providing unique conditions for grape growing. The diverse microclimates, cool nights, and warm days result in wines that are characterized by their elegance, complexity, and intense flavors.

In the early years, Randy and Tina worked tirelessly, with their hands immersed in every aspect of the winemaking process. They meticulously tended to the vineyard, cultivating and nurturing the vines with great care. Harvesting only when the grapes reached their optimum ripeness, they handpicked and sorted each cluster, ensuring that only the finest fruit made its way into the winery.

The winemaking philosophy at Dono dal Cielo emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the true character of the grapes to shine. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, carefully selected to enhance and complement the flavor profiles of the wines. The result is a portfolio of exceptional wines that embody the terroir and express the unique characteristics of the region.

Over the years, Dono dal Cielo has garnered numerous accolades and awards for its outstanding wines. From its luscious red blends to its crisp and vibrant whites, each bottle tells a story of dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Apart from its exceptional wines, Dono dal Cielo offers visitors a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The winery boasts a cozy tasting room, where guests can savor the wines while enjoying breathtaking views of the vineyard and surrounding mountains. Randy and Tina, along with their friendly and knowledgeable staff, take pride in offering personalized tastings, sharing stories, and imparting their deep knowledge and appreciation for winemaking.

In addition to the tasting room experience, Dono dal Cielo hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including vineyard tours, barrel tastings, and seasonal celebrations. Visitors have the opportunity to engage with the winemakers directly, gaining insight into the winemaking process and forming a genuine connection to the land and its wines.

For wine enthusiasts seeking an unforgettable wine country experience that combines breathtaking scenery, exceptional wines, and warm hospitality, Dono dal Cielo is a true gem. Through their unwavering dedication, Randy and Tina Rossi have not only realized their dream but have created a winery that is celebrated and cherished by all who visit.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
