History
Crooked Vine Winery is a charming family-owned winery nestled in the heart of the Livermore Valley wine region in California. Founded in 1994 by Paul and Betty Barrios, the winery has a rich and intriguing history that showcases their passion for crafting exceptional wines.
The story of Crooked Vine Winery can be traced back to Paul Barrios' childhood in Mexico. Growing up in a family of farmers, he developed a love for the land and a deep appreciation for the artisanal process of winemaking. This passion eventually led him to explore the world of viticulture, and he found himself drawn to the Livermore Valley.
In the early 1990s, Paul and Betty purchased a beautiful parcel of land in Livermore with the intention of fulfilling their winemaking dreams. The vineyard was situated amidst rolling hills and benefited from the region's unique microclimate, which is influenced by the cool breezes from the nearby San Francisco Bay. This ideal setting proved to be the canvas upon which Crooked Vine Winery would come to fruition.
The couple wasted no time in planting vines on their land, carefully selecting varietals that would thrive in the Livermore Valley terroir. They planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay grapes, among others, ensuring a diverse range of flavors that would become the backbone of their wine portfolio.
Though the journey was not without obstacles, Paul and Betty's tenacity and unwavering dedication allowed them to overcome challenges and create a winery that stood out among the rest. Their commitment to traditional winemaking techniques, combined with innovation and experimentation, set Crooked Vine Winery apart from its peers.
Over the years, the winery expanded its operations, adding a tasting room that welcomed locals and tourists alike. Visitors were enchanted by the rustic charm of the winery, with its vine-covered trellises, charming picnic areas, and breathtaking vineyard views. The warm and friendly staff at Crooked Vine Winery made sure that each visitor felt like part of the family, further enhancing the overall experience.

Paul and Betty's son, named after his father, assumed the role of winemaker, carrying forward the family's tradition of producing high-quality wines. Under his guidance, Crooked Vine Winery has continued to flourish while staying true to its original vision.
Today, Crooked Vine Winery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a family's love for winemaking. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
