Conway Family Wines
History
Conway Family Wines is a renowned winery located in the heart of California's prestigious wine country. Established in 1974 by the Conway Family, their winery has a fascinating history that spans several generations and is closely intertwined with the growth and development of the California wine industry.
The story begins with patriarch Thomas Conway, who emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the early 1900s. Settling in California, he developed a deep appreciation for the land and its potential for winemaking. He soon started working as a vineyard laborer, learning the craft from the ground up.
Thomas's passion for winemaking was passed down to his son, Patrick Conway, who took the family's winemaking legacy to new heights. Patrick had a visionary approach to winemaking, constantly pushing the boundaries and experimenting with innovative techniques. He recognized the untapped potential of several grape varietals that were not commonly grown in California, such as Syrah and Viognier, and believed they would thrive in the region's diverse microclimates.
With this vision in mind, Patrick Conway established Conway Family Wines in Santa Barbara County in 1974. The region's cool climate and coastal influences were ideal for the cultivation of these unique grape varietals. He acquired prime vineyard land along the Santa Maria Bench, where the cool ocean breezes and well-drained soils provided the perfect conditions for growing exceptional grapes.
Patrick's commitment to quality and innovation soon gained recognition, and Conway Family Wines started receiving accolades for their distinctive and flavorful wines. Their efforts were particularly focused on producing wines that showcased the natural characteristics of the grape varietals, while also reflecting the unique terroir of the Santa Barbara region.
Over the years, Conway Family Wines continued to expand and refine their operations. They invested in state-of-the-art winemaking facilities and collaborated with renowned winemakers, both local and international, to further elevate the quality of their wines. The winery's portfolio grew to include a wide range of varietals, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Grenache, among others.
One of the key milestones for Conway Family Wines came in the 1990s when Patrick's son, Michael Conway, took over the reins of the winery. Building on his father's legacy, Michael brought a fresh perspective and an unwavering dedication to crafting exceptional wines. Under his leadership, the winery implemented sustainable farming practices and embraced organic viticulture, further enhancing the quality and authenticity of their wines.
Today, Conway Family Wines continues to thrive as a family-owned and operated winery, producing some of the finest wines in California. Their commitment to sustainable farming, terroir-driven winemaking, and excellence has helped them establish a strong reputation among wine enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Visitors to the Conway Family Wines estate can experience the rich history and passion that has shaped the winery. The charming tasting room offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, where guests can savor a selection of their award-winning wines while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards.
In conclusion, Conway Family Wines has a remarkable history deeply rooted in California's winemaking heritage. From humble beginnings, they have emerged as a prominent winery with a focus on quality, innovation, and sustainability. Their commitment to crafting exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Santa Barbara region is a testament to the Conway family's enduring passion for winemaking.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
