History
Conn Creek Winery is a renowned winery located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. The winery has a rich history that dates back several decades, showcasing a passion for winemaking and a deep connection with the land.
The story of Conn Creek Winery begins in 1973 when founder Bill Collins first set eyes on Napa Valley. Inspired by the region's breathtaking beauty and its potential for producing world-class wines, Collins decided to pursue his dream of establishing his own winery. He initially named the winery Conn Creek Cabernet, after the nearby stream that flowed beside the property.
From the very beginning, Conn Creek Winery aimed to craft exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, a noble grape variety that thrives in the fertile soils of Napa Valley. Collins recognized the importance of terroir and sought to showcase the distinctiveness of different vineyard sites in his wines. This commitment to terroir-driven winemaking became the cornerstone of Conn Creek's philosophy.
In 1979, Collins brought in Mike McGrath as the winery's first winemaker. Together, they embarked on a journey to produce wines that effortlessly capture the essence of Napa Valley. With a focus on blending grapes from various vineyards, they sought to create wines that would be greater than the sum of their parts.
One of Conn Creek Winery's notable achievements was the creation of their Avante Garde series, introduced in the early 1980s. The Avante Garde wines garnered critical acclaim and established Conn Creek as a winery known for its creative approach to crafting complex and balanced wines.
In 1988, Conn Creek Winery underwent a significant expansion, purchasing the neighboring Villa Mt. Eden winery facility. This acquisition provided additional space for cellar operations and allowed them to broaden their range of wines. With the expanded facilities, Conn Creek could now better accommodate their increasing production while still maintaining their commitment to small-lot winemaking.
Over the years, Conn Creek Winery continuously refined their winemaking techniques and invested in cutting-edge technology to enhance the quality of their wines. Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
