Charbay Distillery & Winery
History
Charbay Distillery & Winery is a renowned and pioneering winery located in the picturesque Napa Valley of California. Founded in 1983 by Miles and Susan Karakasevic, the winery has become an iconic name in the world of artisanal spirits and handcrafted wines. With its unique approach to winemaking and distilling, Charbay has carved a niche for itself as a trailblazer in the industry.
The Karakasevic family's winemaking heritage can be traced back to the 1750s in the former Yugoslavia. Miles Karakasevic, a 12th-generation Master Distiller, grew up in this rich winemaking tradition and eventually brought his expertise to the United States. In 1950, he immigrated to California and began working as a cellar master at the Schramsberg Winery, where he honed his skills and deepened his knowledge of the craft.
After years of experience and a deep passion for winemaking and distilling, Miles and Susan Karakasevic made the decision to establish their own winery. In 1983, Charbay Distillery & Winery was born. Situated in the small town of St. Helena, the winery set out to create exceptional wines and spirits that would be unique, handcrafted, and deeply reflective of the family's heritage.
Right from the start, Charbay set itself apart by producing small-batch, artisanal spirits using traditional methods. Miles Karakasevic's expertise as a Master Distiller allowed the winery to venture into the distillation of spirits like brandy, vodka, rum, and whiskey. This groundbreaking approach made Charbay one of the first wineries in California to also operate as a distillery, showcasing their commitment to innovation and excellence.
Over the years, Charbay has gained acclaim for its diverse range of spirits. Their vodka, made from 100% organically grown American Midwest corn and distilled 13 times in Charbay's copper pot stills, has been recognized as one of the finest vodkas in the world. The winery's brandies, crafted using traditional European pot stills and aged in French oak barrels, continue to impress connoisseurs with their rich flavors and smoothness.
Not content with their success in the world of spirits, Charbay also produces exceptional wines that reflect the family's winemaking heritage. By applying the same craftsmanship and attention to detail that they bring to their spirits, the winery creates varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay, showcasing the unique terroir of the Napa Valley.
One of Charbay's most notable creations is their line of flavored vodkas, aptly named Vodka Release. These vodkas, made by infusing fresh organic fruits and herbs into their award-winning vodka, capture the essence of the California countryside. Flavors like Meyer Lemon, Green Tea, Blood Orange, and Ruby Red Grapefruit have delighted consumers and bolstered Charbay's reputation for creating distinctive spirits.
In addition to their spirits and wines, Charbay also offers visitors the chance to experience their craft firsthand. The winery provides tours and tastings, allowing guests to explore the winemaking and distilling process, and gain insight into the Karakasevic family's artistry and dedication to their craft.
Throughout its history, Charbay Distillery & Winery has remained true to its original vision of producing exceptional, handcrafted spirits and wines. The Karakasevics' commitment to quality, passion for innovation, and respect for tradition have cemented Charbay's reputation as a California wine and spirits pioneer. Their legacy continues to inspire and influence a new generation of winemakers and distillers, making Charbay an invaluable and cherished part of the Napa Valley wine scene.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
